Sailors edge CdM

In traditional Back Bay rivalry fashion, the Newport Harbor High boys

golf team prevailed by two strokes to win the third annual Pelican

Cup against Corona del Mar by a calculated and recalculated score,

386-388, Friday at Pelican Hill Golf Club.

Newport senior Davis Pemstein sank four birdies, including the

last hole to card the best score of the day at 3-over 73 through 18

holes, good for medalist honors.

Justin Morehead also tallied four birdies for the Sailors to mark

74, while Brandon Sowers (75), Paul Neff (80) and Spencer Quinn (84)

rounded out the Newport squad.

Zach Rabinovich drilled four consecutive birdies on the back nine,

finishing out with 76 to lead the Sea Kings. David Su (77), Ben

Tilsen (77), Matt Story (79) and Jamie Bloom (79) scored for CdM.

Newport took a 2-1 series advantage with Friday’s win.

Esquivel unstoppable

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College women’s tennis player Michelle

Esquivel survived her Round of 16 and quarterfinal singles matches in

the Southern California regionals Friday at Cerritos College to

advance to the semifinals at 9 a.m. today.

Esquivel defeated Crys Ren of San Diego City College, 6-2, 6-3, in

a Round of 16, while defeating San Diego Mesa’s Mari Matsumoto, 6-1,

6-2, in the quarters. The singles final follows today’s semifinal at

11 a.m.

Teamed with Jessica Rice, Esquivel also advanced to the doubles

semifinals. Rice lost her singles quarterfinal while Emily Paulson

lost in a Round of 16 singles match, and doubles partners Paulson and

Rachael Sessum lost in a Round of 16.

Esquivel and Rice qualified for the California Community College

State Championships in singles and doubles with their Round of 16

victories Thursday.

OCC duo advances

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College men’s doubles team of Kolbe

Morita and Spencer Solomon won two matches Friday to advance to

today’s quarterfinals at the Southern California regional tennis

tournament at Cypress College.

Morita also won a first-round singles match, before being

eliminated in the round of 16 by Jeroen Van Ruler from Ventura

College.

OCC’s Hiroshi Muto and Scott Fielder were eliminated in doubles

competition Friday.

McAleer goes deep

* SOFTBALL: Senior Brittany McAleer smashed a three-run homer in

the bottom of the third inning to help lead the Costa Mesa High

softball team to a 9-3 Golden West League victory over visiting

Saddleback Friday.

McAleer finished 1 for 2 with three RBIs while senior pitcher

Tiffany Campos tossed six innings with 11 strikeouts and just two

hits against her. Campos was also 3 for 4 at the plate with one RBI.

Freshman Emily Pulaski was 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Mustangs

(9-8, 5-4 in league).

Hembarsky shines

* SOFTBALL: Senior pitcher Rebecca Hembarsky tossed a no-hitter

with four strikeouts in going the distance while also hitting 4 for 4

with three doubles and two RBIs for the Sage Hill School softball

team in a 7-5 Academy League victory Friday at Oxford Academy.

Junior Alison Gonzalez was 2 for 4 at the plate with two doubles

for the second-place Lightning (8-7, 4-2 in league), while freshman

Katie McKeon was 2 for 4 and senior Alex Shitanishi was 2 for 4.

Sage committed eight errors to Oxford’s five, accounting for the

five unearned runs.

Sage visits Whitney at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Pisarski leads Mesa

* BASEBALL: Senior Alex Pisarski hit a two-out, three-RBI double

in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Costa Mesa High

baseball team to a 4-3 victory over visiting Saddleback at TeWinkle

Park Friday in a Golden West League contest.

Pisarski was 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs, one run scored

and a stolen base.

Andrew Sanford struck out nine batters and scattered four hits in

a complete game for the Mustangs. The senior only allowed one earned

run.

Danny Gomez pitched a strong game for the Roadrunners (10-12, 3-6

in league), finishing with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Costa Mesa (8-12-1, 2-6-1) plays host to Ocean View Wednesday at

3:15 p.m.

Sage bests Breakers

* TENNIS: Robert Wee swept in singles while the doubles team of

Michael Garrison and Conrad Whitaker won three times to power the

host Sage Hill School boys tennis team to a 13-5 nonleague victory

over Laguna Beach Friday at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Doubles duos of Dan Chin and Tyler Ross and Karam Sethi and Grant

Gerdau, along with Justin Rispler in singles, each claimed two

doubles sets for the Lightning (13-7), winners of three straight.

Sage, ranked fifth in CIF Southern Section Division V, was without

its top two singles players, Tristan Cordier (mononucleosis) and

Martin Park (cold).

Lightning Coach A.G. Longoria said Cordier is “85%” likely to play

when the Academy League finals begin Friday at 1 p.m. at the BBCRC.

Sage concludes the regular season against Pasadena Poly at 1 p.m.

* BASEBALL: The Newport Harbor High baseball team surrendered

three runs in the fourth inning and went on to fall to host Irvine,

3-1, Friday in a Sea View League contest.

Newport (7-14, 2-9 in league) scored its lone run in the third

inning on consecutive doubles by sophomore P.J. Errington and junior

Chris Thompson. Errington finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and a run

scored while Thompson finished 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Last-place Newport visits Laguna Hills at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Estancia boys fall

* SWIMMING: Juniors Andrew Fassari and Chad Kunert were the lone

winners for the Estancia High boys swim team in a 106-63 Golden West

League loss to host Westminster Friday.

Fassari won the 200-yard freestyle in a CIF consideration time

1:54.60, while also winning the 100 backstroke (1:00.40). Kunert won

the 500 free (5:24) and finished second in the 200 free (1:55). Devon

Mellin was second in the 200 individual medley.

Estancia (5-7, 2-4 in league for fifth) competes in the league

preliminaries Tuesday at Orange.

Warriors defeat Sage

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team lost to

visiting Brethren Christian, 25-7, 25-9, 25-15, Friday in an Academy

League match.

Junior outside hitter Jake Lazere led the Lightning with eight

kills and two service aces while freshman setter Carl Hillgren

finished with 19 assists.

Sage Hill (1-13, 1-7 in league) plays at St. Margaret’s Tuesday at

4 p.m.

Mesa seeks assistants

* SOCCER: The Costa Mesa High boys soccer team is looking for

Bowman named MVP

* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa senior Sarah Bowman was named the Golden

West League MVP in girls water polo by the circuits’ coaches.

Bowman, who was a two-time first-team All-CIF Southern Section

Division VI performer, was the league MVP last year and a first-team

all-league selection as a sophomore.

Joining Bowman on the first-team are Christine Twohig, Allyson

Harris and Annie Le. Carley Millian and Chandra Malapira were named

to second-team all-league.

Twohig, who was also named to the all-CIF first team, and Harris,

a third-team all-CIF selection, are repeat first-team all-league

members.

There were no Estancia players named to the all-league team.

Lamm earns accolade

* TENNIS: Freshman Victor Lamm was named Big West Freshman of the

Year Tuesday following voting by the Big West head coaches. All six

of UCI’s starting lineup received Big West honors.

Seniors Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara were each named All-Big

West first team in singles and made the cut in the doubles category

for the second consecutive season. Junior Peter Surapol was named

All-Big West honorable mention in singles, and the doubles team of

junior Olof Sjolund and sophomore Mustafa Ulukan was named All-Big

West honorable mention.

UCI’s Bentzer honored

* TENNIS: Senior Anna Bentzer was named the Big West Conference

Player of the Year for the second straight season after completing

the year 19-4 at No. 1 singles.

Bentzer also received All-Big West Conferencefirst-team honors in

singles and All-Big West Conference second-team honors in doubles

with freshman Inna Agababian. Junior Izabela Mijic was named All-Big

West Conference second team in singles.
