Man arrested after fatal crash on tollway

A Cypress man who lost control of his vehicle on the San Joaquin

Hills Transportation Corridor (73) on Friday morning has been

arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and of driving under the

influenceof drugs or alcohol, according to a California Highway

Patrol report.

The accident occurred at 9:55 a.m. near Newport Coast Drive and

resulted in the death of the passenger.

Richard Groom, 49, was driving a 2004 Dodge Viper southbound at

more than 100 mph when witnesses said the vehicle spun out of control

and crashed into the center divider, officials said. The car fell

down an 20-foot dirt embankment and ended up facing east in a

northbound lane, the report said.

Rodney Swain, 48, of Oxnard died at Western Medical Center in

Santa Ana, according to Highway Patrol officials.

Groom was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with moderate

injuries.
