A baby sea lion was rescued Sunday in front of lifeguard

headquarters in Newport Beach.

Lt. Boyd Mickley said a small sea lion had been hanging around the

area for a little more than a week. When the tide came in Sunday, the

sea lion pup made his way up to nearby rocks, where he drew a lot of

attention from tourists and passers-by.

“This time of year is when they have a lot of pups,” Mickley said.

“They aren’t as educated about the good places to rest.”

He said another baby sea lion friend came to visit. The Friends of

the Sea Lions, a Laguna Beach sea lion rescue group, were able to

catch the second sea lion just after 6 p.m., but the first one got

away.

Mickley said the Friends members will take the pup back to Laguna

and make sure he is healthy and injury-free before they release him

back into the ocean.
