Mesa’s duo claims league

The Costa Mesa High duo of John Dang and Brian Nguyen claimed the

Golden West League doubles crown after beating an Orange team, 6-4,

6-2, as the league individual boys tennis championships concluded

Tuesday at Ocean View High.

With the victory, Dang and Nguyen advance to the CIF postseason.

Estancia High junior Scott Braunsdorf finished runner-up in the

league singles draw and also moves on to CIF.

Braunsdorf lost, 6-0, 6-0, to Orange’s highly-regarded Steve

Johnson in the final match while freshman Bradley Fisher won by

default for third in league after Costa Mesa’s David Lee withdrew

with an injury.

Estancia’s doubles team of Cesar Gonzalez and Chris Alvergue

finished third with a win over a Costa Mesa pair.

Sea Kings reach semis

* TENNIS: Top-seeded Wesley Miller and Fabian Mathews from Corona

del Mar High each won their second-round matches after first-round

byes Wednesday and advanced to today’s singles semifinals of the

Pacific Coast League boys tennis championships at University.

Matt Chou and Spencer Reitz, along with Alex Nguyen and Sean Pham,

reached the doubles semifinal following victories Wednesday for the

Sea Kings.

Miller, the defending league champion, downed University’s

Nathaniel Burt, 6-1, 6-0, while Mathews defeated Tesoro’s Alex

Latham, 6-2, 6-0.

Reitz and Chou, the top-seeded duo, bested teammates Brent Pham

and John Leonard in the second round, 6-0, 6-1, after a bye while

Nguyen and Sean Pham downed Tom Masaki and Dennis Tran from

University, 6-1, 6-4, for their second victory Wednesday.

Miller faces University’s Jason Lin while Mathews takes on

Tesoro’s Nick Meister in the semifinals, scheduled to start at 12:30

p.m. today. The final will follow.

Reitz and Chou will face Nicholas Vaccari and Gaithan Vaidyonathan

from University while Nguyen and Pham will play Charles Weiskirch and

Brandon Tran of Northwood in another doubles semifinal at 12:30 p.m.

today. The final will also follow.

Sailors can’t cash in

* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High stranded 11 runners and lost its

sixth straight following host Laguna Hills’ 4-2 Sea View League

baseball victory Wednesday.

Laguna (8-15, 4-8 in league) built a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning

before Greg Miner, who finished 2 for 4 with a double, one RBI and a

run scored, slammed a solo home run in the sixth for the Sailors

(7-15, 2-10). Patrick Keehan finished 2 for 4 for the Sailors, who

left the bases loaded in both the first and seventh innings.

* GOLF: Sophomore David Su of the Corona del Mar High boys golf

team shot a two-day, 36-hole total of 149 at the Pacific Coast League

individual championships Wednesday at El Prado Golf Course to finish

sixth and qualify for the CIF postseason.

Su shot 5-over-par and grabbed the last qualification spot, while

Tesoro’s David Zeuske carded a 6-under 138 for the top spot. League

champion Tesoro claimed four of the top six finishes and six of the

top 10.

Su earned first-team all-league status while teammate Jamie Bloom

finished eighth (152) to earn second-team all-league.

Costa Mesa crumbles

* SOFTBALL: Leading by one run, the Costa Mesa High softball team

gave up 10 runs in the ninth inning and fell to visiting Ocean View,

13-5, Wednesday in Golden West League play.

The loss dropped Mesa (10-9, 5-5 in league) to fourth in league

with two games remaining. The top three teams advance to the CIF

Southern Section Division III postseason.

Freshman Emily Pulaski was 2 for 3 at the plate with one run

scored, while Venesi Enesi was 2 for 2 with two runs and Judi Akansel

was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Westminster and Orange are tied for third. Mesa visits Orange at

3:15 p.m. Monday.

Aliso tops Newport

* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor High softball team fell to host

Aliso Niguel, 3-0, in Sea View League play Wednesday.

Two Newport (13-9-1, 2-5 in league) errors in the fourth inning

led to two unearned runs, followed by an Aliso double that drove in

the third run and capped the lone inning of scoring from both sides.

Both Ashley Gleason and Julianne Bass were 1 for 3 at the plate

for the Sailors.

* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team is still in the

third and final playoff spot after a 9-7 Pacific Coast League victory

Tuesday against visiting Laguna Beach.

Freshman Karissa Dempsey connected for two hits and three RBIs

while going the distance in the circle with six hits, four strikeouts

and no walks, giving up three earned runs.

Senior Heather Lohrman was 1 for 4 with two RBIs at the plate for

the Sea Kings (14-9, 5-3 in league). CdM visits Tesoro at 3:15 p.m.

today.

VU to host tourney

* TENNIS: Vanguard University will play host to the NAIA Region II

tennis tournament at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center today and Friday,

both beginning at 9 a.m. Both the VU men’s and women’s teams will be

competing.
