Assemblyman honors local school nurses

Assemblyman Van Tran (R-Costa Mesa) honored dozens of Orange

County school nurses Friday morning at the Newport-Mesa Unified

School District office.

At the School Nurses Appreciation Breakfast, Tran presented

certificates to about 60 nurses who work within his assembly

district, and also gave a state Assembly proclamation to Newport-Mesa

nurse Merry Grasska, the National School Nurse of the Year for

2004-05.

“Nurses do incredibly important work and need to know how much we

appreciate their daily efforts,” Tran said.

Newport-Mesa school wins statewide award

Victoria Elementary School has been named one of 248 California

schools this year to receive the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award,

which recognizes schools that have overcome odds to make academic

progress.

Victoria, located on Costa Mesa’s Westside, was the only

Newport-Mesa school on the list this year. A total of 133 schools in

Los Angeles and Orange Counties received the honor, which the state

Department of Education announced on Wednesday.

“It’s a great honor for the school,” said Newport-Mesa spokeswoman

Jane Garland.
