The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team begins its quest for its

11th CIF Southern Section title as the No. 3 seed in Division I.

Newport Harbor is also in the Division I draw, while the Division

V bracket, released Monday, includes Costa Mesa, Estancia and Sage

Hill.

Estancia and Sage Hill will, in fact, square off in Thursday’s

first round, as the Eagles will visit the Lightning at the Balboa Bay

Club Racquet Club at 2 p.m.

CdM (18-1), which claimed its third straight Pacific Coast League

championship, receives a first-round bye and will meet the winner of

Thursday’s first-round clash between Fountain Valley and San Clemente

on Saturday on the Sea Kings’ courts.

Newport Harbor (7-8), which edged Aliso Niguel for the Sea View

League’s third playoff berth, visits Redondo (18-2), the Bay League

runner-up, in Thursday’s first round.

Estancia (11-6) was the runner-up in the Golden West League, while

Sage Hill (13-7) finished second in the Academy League.

Costa Mesa (10-7), the third-place entry from the Golden West

League, will visit Mission League champion Arroyo (9-6) in Thursday’s

first round.

CdM which won section titles in 2003 and 2001, is led by Pacific

Coast League singles champion Wesley Miller.

Miller, a senior, was 31-1 in regular-season dual matches.

CdM freshman Fabian Matthews, third in the league singles

tournament, was 34-2 in dual matches in the regular season.

Coach Tim Mang’s Sea Kings are also bolstered by a strong doubles

lineup. The duo of Spencer Reitz and Matt Chou defeated teammates

Sean Pham and Alex Nguyen in the title match last week to claim the

Pacific Coast League doubles crown.

Newport Harbor is paced by sophomore Jake Fleming, the Sea View

League singles runner-up.

Estancia junior Scott Braunsdorf was second in the Golden West

League singles tournament, while Eagles freshman Brad Fisher finished

third.

Estancia’s Cesar Gonzalez and Chris Alvergue teamed up to finish

third in the league in doubles.

Costa Mesa is paced by Jon Dang and Brian Nguyen, who won the

Golden West League doubles title.

Mesa’s David Lee reached the third-place match of the league

singles tournament but defaulted due to injury.

Second-round action in Division I and Division V is schedule for

Saturday.

The quarterfinals are slated May 17, the semifinals for May 24 and

the finals are set for June 1 at the Claremont Club.
