Man who fled country scheduled for trial

A former Newport Beach man was scheduled to face fraud charges in a

New York court Tuesday after fleeing the country six years ago.

Eugene M. Carriere, who ran a Newport Beach Internet company, Yes

Entertainment Network Inc., is accused of defrauding investors out of

$11 million, according to Assistant U.S. Atty. Curtis A. Kin. He fled

the country in 1999 after search warrants were issued at his company,

Kin said.

Investigators located Carriere, 56, in Thailand a few weeks ago

and authorities in that country took him into custody, Kin said. He

was flown to New York for an initial court appearance and will likely

later appear in a Santa Ana courthouse, Kin said.

Carriere is charged with mail fraud and money laundering in an

indictment that alleges he sought investors for his company and

didn’t provide returns. He presented his company as a multimedia,

family-oriented website that would generate profits through

advertising, Kin said.

Telemarketers in American and Canadian boiler rooms allegedly

raised $11 million, nearly $4 million of which went into a Hong Kong

bank account for Carriere. Outside telemarketers allegedly received

45% of investor money for sales commission.

The FBI is still seeking James S. Eberhart, 64, who operated the

company with Carriere, Kin said.

Richard Hines, 60, of Long Beach, and John Temple, 65, of Chino

Hills pleaded guilty in connection with the case earlier this year.

The two operated a Beverly Hills telemarketing company, Satellite

Capital Group, and admitted raising millions through at least four

different fraudulent investments, including Carriere’s company.
