Minor B

Dodgers 6, Cardinals 2: Tyler Owens, the Dodgers’ ace pitcher,

threw four scoreless innings en route to a 6-2 victory over the

Cardinals in Costa Mesa National Little League Minor B play Saturday.

Owens gave up one hit, no walks and struck out 10.

Cardinal starting pitcher Garrett Kahre was also impressive,

keeping the Dodgers scoreless until the third inning, when Josh

Godwin lead off the third with a walk. He stole second base and

eventually scored on a passed ball. Dante Capoccia got the Dodgers’

first hit in the fourth, a double that drove in Owens. Capoccia

eventually scored because of his aggressive base running. Davis

Fassett’s single on a squeeze bunt scored Estefany Ramirez from third

in the fifth. Capoccia closed the game out in the sixth, thanks to a

putout at home.

Leftfielder Godwin came up throwing on a base hit with runners on

second and third. He stopped the ball, threw to shortstop Garrett

Deutsch, who relayed the ball to catcher Nick Halloran. Halloran

blocked the plate and tagged out the runner, ending the game.

Dodgers 8, White Sox 6: The Dodgers held off a late-inning rally,

defeating the White Sox when Garrett Deutsch made a game-saving stop

at shortstop, throwing the batter out at first to end the game. The

Dodgers led 8-4 going into the sixth. Dante Capoccia, who was 3 for 3

with one RBI, led the Dodgers’ offense. Erik Rasmussen (one run and

one RBI) and Branden Arecyut (two RBIs) each had one hit and

contributed half the run production.

Davis Fassett knocked in John Santoyo with what proved to be the

winning run on a ground-rule double.

Minor A

Pirates 17, Red Sox 1: Brian Burciaga smashed a ground-rule double

to deep center and Matthew Spicer ripped a bases-loaded triple to

left, providing the biggest of many hits for the visiting Minor-A

Pirates in a 17-1 win over the Red Sox Saturday.

Burciaga, who had three hits, was also robbed in the first inning

when the Red Sox centerfielder made a nice catch of a sinking line

drive. Carter Norris, playing in his second game after an early

season broken wrist, had two hits. Ben Beck and Artie Wisniewski

played solidly at catcher, with Beck throwing to third baseman Robert

Marrone, who gunned down a runner trying to steal. Beck, who had a

triple, pitched the final two innings to finish the Pirates’ first

victory of the season.

Mets 9, Yankees 4: Brooks Watkins, Jesse Paz, Aaron Wood, Brandon

Kingsley, Christian Aguilar, Matt Thomas, Spencer Owens and Manolo

Laguna each had hits in the Mets’ victory Saturday. Max Hume and

Daniel Lee each walked and scored because of alert baserunning. Met

pitchers Paz, Owens and Wood combined for 10 strikeouts.

Pony

Angels 6, Corona del Mar Athletics 4: The Costa Mesa Angels won

their game Saturday against Corona del Mar Athletics, 6-4. Nick

Pederson and Gavin Montague combined on a six-hitter, with Ryan

Boulger catching all seven innings. The Angels took the lead in the

sixth with combined hitting from Gavin Montague, Justin Miller, Danel

Derieg and Ryan Burns. With the help of solid defense by Matt Telles,

Tyler Sullivan, Randy Mendoza, Kevin Thomas and Billy DiGiralamo, the

Angels held the Athletics.

Majors

A’s 12, Cubs 1: The struggling Major A’s bats come alive in a 12-1

victory over the Cubs Saturday as starting pitcher Martin Myszynski

and reliever Frank Farldow combined to allow just one run. The A’s

infield of Brandon Lewis, Brandon Kelly, Idren Luna, Timmy Miller and

Jordan Myers combined for 11 putouts. Logan Benter, who caught part

of the game and then played outfield along with Joseph Raus and Cody

Hanify, accounted for the rest of the put outs with no errors.

T-ball

Cubs, Braves: The T-ball Cubs had a double in each inning thanks

to Dawit Habteab, Spencer Stern and Riley Lord. On the field, Logan

Twardowski threw himself on the ball in the first inning and tagged

out a Braves runner at third base. In the final inning, Jarod Adkins

played first base. Nicolas Favela played third base for the Braves

and made a diving catch and three putouts. Gavin Kane and Kevin Volk

made other great putouts. Solid defensive plays were made by Daniel

Fortin, Rohan Ronvelia, Joey Wakely and Sarah Bordelon. Catcher

Sophie Beazley made key tags for outs at home. Liam Jason hit a home

run.

Dodgers, Rockies: Rockies’ Christian Pruitt, Gage Grupenhagen,

Christian Ferrara, Connor Hamm and Nick Hendricks each tallied strong

hits while Blake Hunt delivered a well-placed single over the second

baseman to advance the runners. The Rockies’ last batter, Raleigh

Lynaugh, cleared the bases when he crushed the ball through the

infield for a two-run homer.

Ian Fowler led the Rockies defense when he caught a fly ball and

then threw to second. The runner beat the ball to second base, but

Travis Hastings chased another runner heading back to first and

applied the tag to complete a double play. Justin Martinez stopped a

tough grounder and made a strong throw to first for the out. Rikky

Hernandez also made some key defensive plays.

Newport Beach Little League

AA

Padres 11, Rangers 5: The Padres collected seven hits by Braden

Brahs, Cole Friedman, Charlie Griffin, Matt Hurst, Parker Reposa and

A.J. Sanchez. Catchers Conner Kelter and James Barrett worked well

with pitchers Gunnar Logan, Brahs, and Griffin to hold the Rangers to

five hits and four walks. The defense, anchored by Jeff Johnston,

Christopher Beyrooty, and Nate Pozin, collected a number of outfield

fly outs to secure the win.

Cardinals 14, Padres 11: The Cardinals opened the playoffs with a

victory over the top-seeded Padres Monday. Jake Hastings and Ben

Banning led the Cardinals, pitching three innings a piece. Hastings

struck out four and walked only one, while Banning struck out two and

was 3 for 4 at the plate with five RBIs.

The Cardinals got on the board in the second inning with a leadoff

hit by Hastings. Several walks followed, then Banning and Jared

Daniels each singled with the bases loaded. Kaden Ebbinga doubled and

singled in the game, while Nick Adams added a hit in the sixth. Ricky

Luerhs scored four times for the Cardinals.

Defensively, second baseman Sterling Beall made a key third out,

while Daniels and Jack Zeigon turned a double play in the fifth.

The Padres were led offensively by Matt Hurst (3 for 3) and Conner

Kelter (2 for 2). The two teams will meet again on May 18 as playoff

action continues.

Pinto American

Indians, A’s: The Indians played a sharp defensive game led by

Andrew Laidlaw’s triple play. Laidlaw snagged a line drive at

shortstop, tagged second and fired over to Adam Freeman at first in

time to catch the runner. Jeremiah Sheldon and Toni Holland also made

solid catches to start double plays. Danny Clark and Kingston

McCarthy recorded outs for the team with their consistent play.

Offensively, Jonathan Boothe knocked a triple and Cameron Jabara hit

the ball hard all day. Morgan Lunsford and Jack Rapillo turned in

solid games.

Newport Harbor Baseball Association

Bronco

Toshiba Senior Classic 2, Newport Auto Center 1: Teddy Steffel led

off pitching for Toshiba Senior Classic with three scoreless innings

while racking up five strikeouts and surrendering only one hit in

TSC’s 2-1 victory Thursday.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Aaron Cervantes reached on

an error. Next up was Steffel, who hit a two-run shot over the

center-field fence, providing the margin of victory for TSC.

Singles were scratched out by Scotty Steffel, Cameron Cuevas,

Jakob Trobman and Spencer Rautus. Solid defensive performances were

turned in by AJ Talbott and Sean Melton. Zach Beaudin, Matt Porteous,

and Brett Parker turned in fine pitching performances for Newport

Auto Center while solid defensive plays were executed by Ethan

Cochran, Matt Mello, and Austin Rios for NAC.

Cameron Cuevas followed Steffel on the mound, scattering two hits

for NAC on a single by Brett Parker, followed by an RBI single by

Dillon Gillet in the fourth. Trobman struck out the side in the

bottom of the last inning for the save.

Mustang

Creative Play 11, Back Bay Funding 1: Nick Viera, Sean Cox and

Josue Rivera combined to pitch Creative Play’s strongest performance

from the mound this season in an 11-1 victory Saturday. Defensively,

Creative Play did not make an error. Creative Play had contributions

from Diego Morales, Sean Cox, Taylor Parks, Griff Amies, Charlie

Gels, behind the plate, along with Nick Viera and Josue Rivera

fielding the pitchers’ position. Offensively, Taylor Parks and Josue

Rivera had three hits; Charlie Gels, Nick Viera and Sean Cox having

two hits; and Zach Cornwell scorching a hit.

Creative Play 9, Wide Open 4: Creative Play was led by solid

pitching efforts from Josue Rivera and Sean Cox in a 9-4 win

Thursday. Offensively, Zach Cornwell lead Creative Play’s attack with

a triple and double, Sean Cox had two doubles and Jack Maurer had a

rip. Two runs were scored each by Nick Viera and Charlie Gels. Dalton

Jensen led Wide Open with two hits.

Grower’s Direct 5, Back Bay Funding 4: Grower’s came out strong in

the first inning and scored two runs with hits by Shane MacGilfrey,

Brendan Goodwin and TK McWhertor in a 5-4 win Wednesday. With notable

hits by TJ Elienko and Joe Porter, who got his first triple of the

season, he advanced Rusty Edwards of Grower’s to score a run in the

fourth, taking a 3-2 lead.

SOCCER

U.S. Youth Soccer Association

Girls under-16

Slammers Futbol Club:

The Slammers FC soccer team won their second California Youth

Soccer Association South (Cal South) State Cup Championship in three

years this past weekend by defeating the San Diego Surf 2-0. Based on

this championship, the Slammers will now represent Cal South at the

Far West regionals in Colorado next month.

Slammers’ goalkeeper Lauren Gregston of Lake Forest kept the score

at zero with a key first-half save. Kellye Joswick of Placentia and

Christen Press of Palos Verdes Estates provided the scoring for the

Slammers with two second-half goals.

Players come from all over the Southland came to play for the

Newport Beach-based Slammers FC organization. The players include, in

addition to Gregston, Joswick and Press: Alyssa Davila of Upland,

Ashley Elliot of Corona, Tanya Emerson of Capo Beach, Taylor Fallon

of Newport Beach, Leslie Grandy of Diamond Bar, Jessica Gordon of

Tujunga, Haleigh Guertin of Corona, Lauren Hernandez of Long Beach,

Megan Jesolva of La Mirada, Alicia Lugo of Lancaster, Cindy Mendoza

of Costa Mesa, Christina Murillo of Rancho Santa Margarita, Kristin

Thuve of Huntington Beach, Leslie White of Corona and Jackie Zinke of

Corona Del Mar. The Slammers are coached by Ziad Khoury of Costa Mesa

with assistance from Frank Jesolva of La Mirada and Monique

Garciaparra of Whittier.

AYSO Region 97

Girls under-12

Newport Beach 0, Tustin 0: Tustin, undefeated during the season

and the top seed in the playoffs, was held to a scoreless tie in a

AYSO Region 97 girls under-12 game with Newport Beach Saturday.

Newport’s Morgan Williams was strong in goal and kept her team in the

game. Tustin’s offense was shut down as Newport’s Nicole Baker and

Meghan Nance teamed up to keep Tustin’s top scorer out of the game.

Newport’s entire defense, led by Kelly Rorden, Megan Case, Sophia

Evans and Courtney McIntosh, played aggressively.

Newport’s offense came close on a few opportunities with shots by

Brianna Truxton, Ava Nelson and Chelsea Barth. Lauren D’ippolito,

Kathryn Zimmermann and Cindy Barnard each played well in the effort.

Newport Beach 4, Irvine 0: Beth Barnard opened up the scoring

minutes into the game with a lofted shot off Lauren D’Ippolito’s

pass. Minutes later, D’Ippolito fed Kathryn Zimmermann, who scored to

make it 2-0. Chelsea Barth one-timed Brianna Truxton’s pass to make

it 3-0. Morgan Williams lifted her cross to Ava Nelson who headed the

ball into the net to make the score 4-0.

Courtney McIntosh and Sophia Evans frustrated Irvine and kept them

from mounting attacks. Christie Ohlhaver dominated the middle of the

field. Megan Case led Newport’s defense of Nicole Baker, Kelly Rorden

and Meghan Nance.

Girls under-10

Red Rockets 2, Blue Ladies 1: Madison Mastera and Gianna Light

scored with assistance from Elissia Schilling. Savannah Vrbas, Jenna

Jarvis, and Andria Spears kept overturning balls at midfield. Livvie

Muscatello and Kailen Locke, again, proved a hard defense to crack.

Goalkeeper Kellie Melendres swept up many goal attempts.

Boys under-10

Unknowns, Blue Raptors: Chaz Beek scored for the Unknowns and kept

the pressure on the Raptor keeper throughout the game. Wil Crook,

Charlie Crook and Andrew Shearer played a strong offensive game with

excellent ball movement. Kevin Oswalt made key saves on a number of

Raptor blasts. Tanner Barrett and Daniel Shokrollahi provided tough

defense.

Girls under-6

Green Lightning, Pink Butterflies: Erika Ellis lit up the field on

Saturday with two goals early in the game. Nikki Sanchez and Paula

Padrani also scored for the Lightning, with Padrini’s goal coming off

a huge throw in by Caroline Wilkes. Riley De Castroverde and Destry

Comp both made solid dribbling runs at the goal. Lauren Henke fought

hard for the ball in the middle, winning several balls for the Green

Lightning.

WATER POLO

The Golden West Water Polo Club will be holding three summer

sessions at UC Irvine for girls ages 14-20, with the first session
