Green tames Black

In an exciting game that needed nine innings to decide the winner,

the Green Lightning pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Black Magic in

a south Huntington Beach fast-pitch softball third-round 10-and-under

division playoff game.

Logan Vournas drove in Shannon Wolf in the bottom of the ninth

inning to give the Green Lightning the win.

In a tense pitchers duel, Black Magic’s Angie Santopaolo held the

Green Lightning scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.

Down two runs, the Green Lightning’s Nikki Watkins singled and

came home on Breanna McCaa’s hit. McCaa scored on Alex Quenneville’s

base hit to tie the score at 2-2.

In the eighth, Sabah Ramirez was driven home by Emily Jahansouz to

give the Black Magic a 3-2 lead. The Green Lightning fought right

back in the bottom of the inning, scoring the tying run when Amanda

Sneed drove home Krystal Keenan.

Lauren Deats held the Black Magic offense scoreless in the top of

the ninth to set up Vournas’ game-winning hit.

Ramirez and Megan Anderson each had big hits for the Black Magic.

McCaa and Watkins each had two hits and Deats and Carolina Luque

each singled for the Green Lightning.

Santopaolo and Deats both went the distance.

In second-round action:

Attack Mode, 2, Green Lightning 0

Sammy Cordova tamed the Green Lightning by allowing two hits and a

walk in six shutout innings on the mound for regular season champion

Attack Mode.

Green Lightning pitcher Lauren Deats was strong as well, giving up

only two runs on three hits.

Phoebe Puerner had an RBI single to drive in Sarah Wood, who had

also singled, for a 1-0 lead. Katie Kendrick hit a home run in the

fourth to make it 2-0.

Logan Vournas and Chanel Luis each had a hit for the Green

Lightning.
