Huntington Beach resident Valerie Kompaniez, 56, organized eight

cycling teams to ride in this year’s American Diabetes Assn. 50K Tour

De Cure, a fundraiser to find a cure for diabetes. While training for

the race, Kompaniez fell and fractured her pelvis and will not be

racing in the event on May 21. Kompaniez plans to cheer on her riders

from the sidelines in a wheelchair.

Katherine J. Thompson, 22, of Huntington Beach, will graduate June

9 from Harvard University with a degree in earth and planetary

sciences. Thompson, the daughter of Bruce and Janis Thompson, is a

2001 graduate of Edison High School.
