Sage in playoffs

The Sage Hill School softball team advances to the playoffs for the

second time in three years after a 13-3 Academy League victory over

host Capistrano Valley Christian Thursday.

Alex Shitanishi was 4 for 5, with two doubles and two RBIs, while

Rebecca Hembarsky was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Lauren Neale was 2

for 3 with one RBI.

Vicky Gutierrez, Katie McKeon, Amy Penner and Katie Puishys each

had an RBI for the winners (12-7, 7-3 in league).

UCI’s Nyberg fifth

* TRACK AND FIELD: Eric Nyberg led a quartet of UC Irvine athletes

that finished fifth through eighth to conclude the men’s decathlon at

the Big West Conference track and field championships Thursday at

Anteater Stadium.

Nyberg tallied 6,330 points and placed fifth and was followed in

order by teammates James Lehigh (6,060), Aaron Lewis (5,884) and

Trent Richert (5,752).

Idaho senior Jereme Richardson (7,059) defended his conference

title.

UCI (10 points) sits in second, behind Idaho (16) heading into today’s competition.

Sailors eliminated

* TENNIS: Host Redondo Union High’s boys tennis team claimed all

nine doubles matches and held off Newport Harbor for a 12-6 CIF

Southern Section Division I first-round playoff victory Thursday.

Sophomore Jake Fleming swept his three singles sets for the

Sailors (7-9), who trailed, 7-5, after the second round.

Freshman Taylor Friend won twice while Chris Lamenzo earned one

victory in singles for the Sailors.

Newport Coach Jeff Thomsen stacked his doubles teams, but said

Redondo (19-2) proved too difficult playing in front of an

enthusiastic home crowd.

Fleming, who improved to 32-4 this season, will compete in the CIF

Southern Section individual singles tournament, beginning May 20.

Warriors blank Sailors

* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor High softball team fell, 1-0, in a

12 inning Sea View League game Thursday.

The Sailors (13-12-1, 2-8 in league) had four hits and one error,

but a double by Woodbridge in the 12th knocked in the winning run.

Newport finished the season on a 54-inning scoreless streak.
