CORONA DEL MAR -- Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team beat host

Villa Park in the CIF Division II quarterfinals Friday night, 25-11,

22-25, 26-24, 25-18.

“We got off to a great start,” Sea Kings Coach Steve Conti said.

“Everything was flowing and breaks were going our way.”

Kevin Welch had a productive all-around match for the Sea Kings

(25-6) with 14 kills, 10 digs, six blocks and two service aces. Two

of Welch’s blocks were the last two points to win the match for CdM.

Tom Welch led the CdM offense with 23 kills along with Gus Ellis,

who added 11 kills. Solid defensive efforts came from Adam Smith with

nine digs and Ben Applebee with eight digs. Both Smith and Applebee

had a service ace along with Shane Collins, Phil Bannan and Tom

Welch.

CdM won the first game easily, but the Spartans came back to win

the second game.

“After the second game I think we weren’t playing not to lose, we

were playing to win,” Conti said. “The key thing tonight was winning

game three.”

For the Spartans (27-10) J.D. Rasmussen had 10 kills and James

Viney helped out on defense with four blocks. Viney also added a

service ace along with Nick Madden and Daniel Hart.

CdM will host the semifinals on Wednesday against San Marcos at an

alternate site.

Estancia rallies for win

* Junior Scott Markley had a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs to

lead the fourth-seeded Estancia High boys volleyball team to a 14-25,

25-22, 25-22, 25-21 CIF Southern Section Division III quarterfinal

win at Beverly Hills Friday.

Twin brother Shaun Markley posted 12 kills, while junior Leonard

Juska notched six kills filling in at the middle blocker position for

junior Dallas Kopp, who suffered a season-ending injury prior to the

playoffs. Senior Trevor Holmes tallied 29 assists and three solo

blocks.

The defending Division III champion Eagles (21-9) rallied from a

first-game loss to sweep the next three, setting up a semifinal

showdown against visiting top-seeded Orange Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Wednesday with the site to be determined.

Sailors are swept

* Two-time defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion

Loyola High overpowered its way to a sweeping 25-18, 25-20, 26-24 quarterfinal victory over visiting Newport Harbor Friday night.

The Sailors (20-12) led the third game until second-seeded Loyola

(27-5) rallied to tie it at 23, eventually pulling ahead, 26-24, to

clinch the match.

UCLA-bound senior Brett Perrine posted a match-high 17 kills to

lead Newport, while junior Brett Auer tallied nine kills and eight

digs. Freshman Kyle Caldwell had seven kills and two blocks, and

junior Ted Slater added 35 assists.
