Mayor Steve Bromberg appointed to judgeship

Mayor Steve Bromberg’s time on the City Council is coming to an

end.

Bromberg was appointed to the Orange County Superior Court bench

by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a change in jobs that will force

Bromberg to resign his council seat.

Bromberg is scheduled to meet with the court’s presiding judge

Monday to figure out the details of his new job. After that meeting,

it will be clearer when he has to resign.

By city law, the council must appoint a replacement within 30 days

of the mayor leaving. If it fails to reach consensus, the matter goes

to a public vote.

Bromberg is the third council member to resign in three years.

* St. James Church welcomed Evans Kisekka, the bishop of the

Diocese of Luwero, last week.

The Newport Beach church broke away from the Episcopal Church of

the United States last year. Earlier this year, Pastor Praveen Bunyan

and six of his congregants visited Kisekka in Uganda.

Today, the bishop is scheduled to lead a confirmation and

reconfirmation service at the church.

* To accommodate large vessels that are in town for this weekend’s

First Team Real Estate Invitational Regatta, 400 feet of temporary

docks were added near Carnation Cove.

The sailboats could not be docked in the shallow water because

they would likely have scraped the bottom of Newport Harbor.

Seventeen boats are participating in the regatta, which concludes

today.
