Coroner identifies man found near pier

The Orange County Coroner’s Office has identified the body of a

man who was pulled out of the ocean at about 3:40 p.m. Friday near

Balboa Pier.

Coroner’s office deputy Mitchell Sigal said the victim was Francis

Roberts, 49, from Blandford Forum in the United Kingdom.

An autopsy was done on Roberts on Saturday, but Sigal said the

cause of death was still under investigation.

Witnesses saw Roberts’ body floating face down in the water on

Friday and called emergency personnel.

The victim died shortly after he was taken to Hoag Memorial

Hospital Presbyterian.
