Francine du Plessix Gray will speak about her just-released book

“Them: A Memoir of Parents.” The author’s mother, Tatiana du Plessix,

was the wife of a French diplomat and muse of the Russian poet

Vladimir Mayakovsky. Her father, Alexander Liberman, was a gifted

magazine editor and aspiring artist. Both were part of the

progressive artistic Russian emigre community living in Paris in the

30s. They fled to New York with young Francine during WWII and rose

to the top of New York City’s high society. The author will speak

from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Newport Beach Central Library in the Friends

meeting room, 1000 Avocado Ave., Newport Beach. Cost is $10 for

students with I.D., $15 for library foundation members and $20 for

Robert Corell will present “Rapid Warming of the Arctic,” a

four-year study involving eight Arctic countries. Corell chaired the

Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, which confirmed the Earth’s climate

is changing more rapidly and persistently than at any time since the

beginning of civilization. He is a senior research fellow in the

Atmospheric Policy program of the American Meteorological Society and

a participant in the Initiative for Science and Technology for

Sustainability. Corell also helped establish the U.S. National

Assessment of the Consequences of Climate Variability and Change.

The 75th anniversary of the first flag to be raised on the

original school flag pole at Newport Harbor High School will this

year honor 36 young men who gave their lives in defense of freedom,

all patriotic members of the school’s family. Men who were at Pearl

Harbor will raise the flag and a large picture of the first flag will

“Mud Meals and Soil Stories” for home-schooled children is a

two-hour program that provides students with hands-on explorations of
