Anne Yelsey, a former Corona del Mar High standout, and partner Amber

Liu advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA women’s tennis doubles

championships with a victory Wednesday.

Yelsey and Liu, both of national champion Stanford, defeated

Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan of the University of Florida,

6-1, 7-5, and join teammates Erin Burdette and Alice Barnes in the

quarterfinals in Athens, Ga.

Liu and Yelsey, a sophomore, will face the fourth-seeded tandem of

Riza Zalameda and Daniella Bercek of UCLA today.

Stanford captured its 14th NCAA championship with a 4-0 victory

over Texas, completing its ninth undefeated season (27-0) in program

history.

Yelsey, meanwhile, reached the quarterfinals of the women’s

singles competition before bowing out Wednesday.

She defeated Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson, 6-3, 6-4, in the round

of 64 on Monday before besting Wake Forest’s Karin Coetzee, 6-3, 6-1,

in Tuesday’s round of 32. The victories were the 31st and 32nd for Yelsey this season.

Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor ended Yelsey’s run with a 6-4, 6-7 (3),

7-5 triumph in the round of 16 Wednesday.

CdM baseball travels

* BASEBALL: Corona del Mar High’s baseball team lost a coin flip

Wednesday and will travel to face top-seeded La Quinta in a CIF

Southern Section Division III quarterfinal at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

The Sea Kings (18-9) have outscored their first two playoff foes,

7-0.

La Quinta (26-4) has won 14 straight games.

The winner faces either Gahr or fourth-seeded Temecula Valley in

the semifinals Tuesday.
