Code Red, a local girls’ under-13 club soccer team, closed out its

spring season by finishing second at the California Soccer League Cup

tournament.

Code Red defeated the Riverside Fury, 4-3, in a shootout before

falling in the tournament final, 2-1, to the San Bernardino Blast, as

temperatures surpassed the 100-degree mark at the Blast Soccer

Complex in San Bernardino.

Against the Riverside Fury, the two teams combined to score three

goals in the opening half. All three goals were scored in the match’s

first eight minutes, as Code Red took a 2-1 halftime lead.

Jodi Hwang first put Code Red on the scoreboard by driving a

penalty kick past the Fury’s diving goalie. After the Fury tied the

score on a direct kick, Alli Budd placed a direct kick high into the

far corner of the goal to give Code Red a 2-1 edge.

In the second half, the Fury again tied the match on a direct

kick, and the score remained tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation.

In a shootout that was decided by five penalty kicks by each side,

Code Red’s Hwang, Alison Hensley, Lauren Hanson and Rachel Pasternak

each connected on their kicks, and Code Red goalie Tiffany Van Tress

blocked two shots by the Fury.

In the championship match against the San Bernardino Blast, Code

Red’s only goal was scored when Kelly Mitsumori followed Hensley’s

deflected shot and slipped the ball past the goalie into the net.

The Blast came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit by scoring twice

in the second half to earn the title.
