AIDS Walk aids local clinic

Laguna Beach Community Clinic is one of nine organizations assisting

those affected by HIV/AIDS that will receive funds raised during the

19th annual AIDS Walk Orange County, taking place Sunday on the UC

Irvine campus.

The walk, a 7.5-kilometer event, is expected to draw thousands of

participants. The event will take place at UC Irvine-Chancellor’s

Rose Garden and Administrative Loop, next to the Barclay Theater.

There is no charge to attend.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 8:45.

The walk begins at 9:30 a.m., with a celebration ceremony at 11:45

a.m.

Orange County Shanti, formerly Laguna Shanti, is organizing a team

Scientologists to open Laguna Beach mission

The Church of Scientology Mission of Laguna Beach will hold a

day-long grand opening and open house beginning at 1 p.m. Friday,

June 10. The newly renovated mission building is located at 2949 S.

Coast Highway, at Nyes Place in South Laguna.

Festivities begin at 1 p.m. and a ribbon-cutting will take place

at 2 with community leaders, guest speakers and artists. The

celebration continues into the evening with live entertainment, food

and tours of the facility.

The Mission will offer Sunday Services, seminars, workshops,

classes, counseling and community activities.

The services are based on the fundamental subjects of Scientology,

from the writings of L. Ron Hubbard. For more information, call (866)

Golden age dancers will highlight seniors’ meeting

Choreographer Roy Fitzell and dance partner Joyce Goodman will

entertain at a senior meeting 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 13 at the

Laguna Beach Senior Center, 384 Legion Street.

Fitzell is a distinguished artist and choreographer, having worked

with Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, Cyd Charise, Debbie Reynolds,

Donald O’Connor and Bob Fosse. He has been involved in television

shows, movies, opera and ballet, and in university dance departments.

Goodman danced with Fitzell 30 years ago, and they reunited two

years ago. Goodman has taught ballroom dancing for Fred Astaire and

Arthur Murray. She has performed with theater groups including the

Laguna Playhouse, and has also designed exercise programs to benefit

patients in long-term care facilities.

City Council seeks arts applicants

The Laguna Beach City Council is accepting applications for five

seats on the Arts Commission.

The seven-member Arts Commission meets the second and fourth

Mondays of each month at 5:30 p.m., and advises the council in all

matters pertaining to artistic aspects of the city, including

recommending ordinances, rules and regulations for the administration

and preservation of the fine/performing arts of the community.

The commission also oversees the Art in Public Places program.

Commissioners, who must be Laguna Beach residents, are appointed

for two-year terms.

Four of the seven members must be actively participating in the

arts, and commissioners receive compensation of $60 per month for

their services.

Applications are available at the city clerk’s office at City

Hall, 505 Forest Ave., and must be filed with the city clerk by 5

p.m. Tuesday, June 14. Applicants will be interviewed by the council

at a 6 p.m. June 21 meeting in the council chambers.
