UCI’s Schroer honored

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine senior right-hander Steve Schroer was named

Big West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week after a three-hit baseball

shutout May 28 against visiting Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

A three-year reliever for UCI, Schroer was thrust into a starting

role as a senior, due to injuries and was brilliant in his final

collegiate appearance.

Schroer, who had not pitched more than seven innings over his

collegiate career, struck out seven and allowed just one Mustang to

reach third in an 11-0 victory.

He faced four more than the minimum and improved his record to

7-5.

Schroer was 13-8 over four years, with four saves and a 2.85

career ERA. His 170 strikeouts in 186 innings rank 10th in UCI career

annals.

Local trio triumphs

* BASEBALL: Vinnie Bartolona, Chase Kapana and Brennan Callahan

were overall champions in their respective age groups in the Pitch,

Hit & Run competition hosted by the City of Newport Beach May 15.
