Junior players to perform ‘Staircase’

The Junior Park Avenue Players at Thurston Middle School will

present Bell Kaufman’s “Up the Down Staircase,” directed by Mark

Dressler, at 7:30 p.m. Friday; and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the

school, 2100 Park Ave.

Five graduate

from Sage Hill

Five students from Laguna Beach will be part of the 2005 Sage Hill

School graduating class. They are: Angelique Thomas, Devin Tooma,

Shelby McKenna, David Packard and Jordan Ogron.

“We are proud of this class,” Head of School Clint Wilkins said.

“They are an unusually caring and thoughtful group of young people

who have led by example, especially in creating positive

relationships, both with each other and with the faculty and staff.”

Commencement will take place at 4 p.m. today on the Sage Hill

Campus, 20402 Newport Coast Drive, Newport Beach.

Sage Hill School, a coeducational college preparatory high school

of 400 students, was founded in 2000 and claims to be Orange County’s

only nonprofit, independent, nondenominational high school.

Top of the World honors veterans

Top of the World Elementary School held a patriotic assembly on

May 20. The children sang patriotic songs and recited patriotic

messages in honor of Memorial Day. They invited members of the

American Legion to attend their assembly.

During the week, the children prepared a large wall poster where

they placed letters, articles and photos of family and friends who

have or are now serving in the military.

Laguna Beach High graduate activities

* Baccalaureate, 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 19 at the Laguna Beach

United Methodist Church. The GradNite 2005 committee is sponsoring

this event. Baccalaureate is an interfaith service that celebrates

the completion of an undergraduate academic career. Family and

friends are invited to attend the service, followed by a reception.

* Candle Rose, 7 p.m. Tues., June 21 in the Artists’ Theatre.

Family and friends are invited to attend this special evening

showcasing seniors’ talents. The roses and messages that were ordered

will be given to the seniors after the performance.

* Senior trip to Knott’s Berry Farm, Wed., June 22. Tickets are

$30. Students must complete a permission form. Students will check in

at 9 a.m. on Short Street. Buses leave at 9:30 a.m. and depart from

Knott’s at 4:30 p.m. for the return trip. Students must complete the

checkout process with their counselors by noon on June 20 to attend

the senior trip.

* Graduation ceremony, 8 p.m., Thurs., June 23, Irvine Bowl.

Parents and guests should be seated by 7:30 p.m.; procession begins

promptly at 8 p.m. Prior to the ceremony, seniors meet at the high

school football bleachers at 6:45 p.m. for check-in and bus

transportation to the Irvine Bowl. All students are required to take

the bus, and no carry-on articles are allowed. Buses will not return.

* All-night grad party. The GradNite 2005 committee is sponsoring

this event following graduation ceremonies. Students will board the

buses for the all-night grad party at the festival grounds directly

after the ceremony. Parents may bring casual clothing for students to

change into after the ceremony, prior to boarding the bus to the

party. All students who are attending the party are required to sign

the student behavior contract.

Soccer coach to rock for Dad’s Day

Andy Thomas, Laguna Beach soccer club director of coaching and

former boys’ varsity soccer coach at the high school, will perform

with his band, The Ferns, at a Father’s Day rock ‘n roll show at the

Coach House in San Juan Capistrano at 8 p.m. June 19.

The band’s original pop/rock has captured fans of all ages at

Hennessey’s and Laguna Beach Brewing Company throughout the year. The

band also opened for Sha-Na-Na last year and recently opened for

Dread Zeppelin.

The Jerry Garcia Band will take to the stage after The Ferns.
