Pirates earn berth in this week’s tourney

Getting a big offensive production when they needed it most, the

Pirates secured a berth in this week’s District 62 Tournament of

Champions by defeating the Yankees, 7-1, in Seaview Little League

Majors Division playoff action.

Jacob Yusko hit his second home run of the season, Nick Pedevilla

doubled and added a two-run single, and Drew Daily doubled and

singled to pace the Pirates on offense.

Aaron Anguiano notched the win in a relief effort. Pedevilla

started on the mound for the Pirates and struck out six in three

innings.

Ruben Munoz of the Yankees pitched a complete game and recorded

eight strikeouts. Troy Baljeu, Trevor Becker and Brandon Hastings had

key hits for the Yankees.

The Red Sox finished the season 14-4 and won the league title and

the automatic invitation to the District 62 Tournament of Champions

that went with it.

The Red Sox played their first district tournament game Wednesday

against the Costa Mesa National Mets at Mile Square Park in Fountain

Valley. The score was not available at press time.

Finishing second in the division standings were the Giants who are

managed by Mike Mayeaux.

The Giants, who finished the regular season 13-5, take on the

Costa Mesa National Dodgers today at 5 p.m. in a first-round game at

Huntington Valley Little League.

Giants 14, Diamondbacks 3

In a one-game playoff to determine the league’s final entry in the

District 62 Tournament of Champions Minor A Division tournament

currently underway, the Giants rolled to an 11-run victory.

The teams had finished the regular season with identical records,

necessitating a one-game playoff.

The Giants put the game away in the top of the sixth inning by

scoring nine runs.

They sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame.

Dane Perkins pitched the first three innings for the Giants and

allowed two runs on six hits, striking out three.

Grant Mayeaux finished up allowing one run, a hit and struck out

six.

The Giants were led in hitting by Mayeaux, who went three for

three; and Perkins, Jake Bauers, Robert Cornwell, Kyle Jepson and

Jason Baxter who each had two hits, with Bauers getting a double.

Giants 17, Angels 13

The Giants jumped out to an early lead, nearly let it slip away,

then held on to beat the Angels.

Giants pitchers Jake Bauers, Robert Cornwell and Grant Mayeaux

combined for 13 strikeouts.

Bauers and Mayeaux each went four for five on offense, Dane

Perkins went three for three, and Darren Allen and Kyle Jepson each

went two for three.

Minor A Division

Angels 9, Dodgers 6

In a matchup pitting teams that qualified for the District 62

Tournament of Champions, the Angels secured the division’s top seed

by defeating the Dodgers.

Kyle Chavez had an RBI double and single, Jillian Martinez had a

pair of singles, and Thomas Wadsworth, Aaron Dorff and Blake

Kirkenslager singled for the Angels.

Dorff, Chavez and Kirkenslager each pitched for the Angels.

Garret Rios had an RBI double, Anders Davis had a two-run single,

Jake Dailey doubled, James Horn singled twice, and Kyle Williams and

Chris McMillian each singled for the Dodgers.

Mason Talbert started on the mound for the Dodgers and was

followed in relief by Rios, who made his pitching debut, and Horn.
