Just 12 days ago, Aaron Kavanagh coached Ocean View High to its

second CIF-Southern Section baseball championship in school history.

On Monday, he tendered his resignation.

Kavanagh, a 1998 graduate of the school, said he resigned because

there was no full-time teaching position at the school available for

him.

He has since become the head baseball coach at Quartz Hill High,

where he has been offered a full-time teaching position in the

school’s social studies department.

Kavanagh was a substitute teacher within the Huntington Beach

Union High School District during the current school year.

“It was an easy decision, because I’ve always wanted to teach

full-time, and they didn’t offer me anything at Ocean View,” said

Kavanagh, who was a senior pitcher on the 1998 Seahawks team that won

the first Southern Section baseball title in school history.

Kavanagh served the past two years as varsity baseball coach at

Ocean View. During his tenure, the Seahawks won consecutive Golden

West League championships, reached the quarterfinals in 2004 and

posted an overall record of 43-13. They finished the 2005 season with

a 16-game winning streak, a season which culminated in a 3-2 victory

over Temecula Valley in the Division III title game at Angel Stadium.

Prior to his head coaching stint, Kavanagh served as a varsity

assistant coach at Ocean View.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have a teaching position to offer him,”

Gilden said. “I think that Quartz Hill is very fortunate to have

Aaron.

“It’s bittersweet for us at Ocean View. I’m as happy as can be for

him that he found a teaching position in the area of social studies,

but we will miss him terribly. He’s a man with good qualifications

and of great character. It’s a very exciting time for him.”

Kavanagh said he is inheriting a Quartz Hills baseball program

that has qualified for the playoffs the past five years and has won a

couple of Golden League titles.
