Corona del Mar High senior outside hitter Kevin Welch was named CIF

Southern Section Division II boys volleyball Player of the Year and

the Sea Kings’ Steve Conti was named Division II Coach of the Year.

Welch, who will attend the University of Indiana in the fall, had

340 kills, 222 digs, 49 solo blocks and 45 service aces to lead CdM

to the team’s third straight Pacific Coast League title as well as

the CIF Division II championship.

Joining Welch on the first-team All-CIF Division II team is twin

brother and outside hitter Tom Welch. Tom, who will attend the

University of Arizona next year, finished with 249 kills, 144 digs,

28 blocks and service aces. Tom is a repeat first-team All-CIF

honoree while Kevin was a second-team All-CIF selection last year.

Estancia senior setter Trevor Holmes was named first-team All-CIF

Division III. Holmes, who was a second-team All-CIF selection last

year, finished with 685 assists with only 15 ball handling errors.

The two-time first-team All-Golden West League performer also

registered 127 kills, 78 service errors, 163 digs and 30 solo blocks.

UCLA-bound Brett Perrine, a Newport Harbor senior, was a

second-team All-CIF Division I performer, as was CdM’s Adam Smith in

Division II and Estancia’s Dallas Kopp and Scott Markley in Division

III.

Phil Bannon, CdM’s sophomore setter, was a third-team All-CIF

Division II selection while Estancia’s Shaun Markley and Costa Mesa’s

Ryan Bagwell were selected third-team All-CIF Division III.
