A bright future for Costa Mesa libraries

At the pace of everyday events, sometimes it is easy to miss a

significant event. A case in point is the June 7 Costa Mesa City

Council meeting where the council unanimously adopted a resolution

setting aside Civic Center Park for a 10-year period for future

construction of a Central Library.

This library will be of great benefit to all segments of the

community -- those benefits include increased property values for

homeowners and helping people start new businesses. Libraries help

residents manage personal finance or invest their saved money or find

new jobs. Good libraries help raise test scores for school children,

and good libraries assist workers in being more effective in their

jobs. But they are also a source of personal enjoyment. They nurture

a love of reading, and they improve quality of life.

The Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries has accepted the challenge

to raise funds to build the Central Library in Civic Center Park. We

are looking forward to a library that is large enough to house the

collections and programs that can make a really positive change in

our community.

We urge everyone in Costa Mesa to join us in this endeavor. For
