CdM’s Maggard, Presson named All-CIF
Corona del Mar High seniors Wess Presson and Ben Maggard are
second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division III baseball
selections.
Presson, a catcher and outfielder, was tied for the team lead with
29 hits, including six doubles and two home runs. He was second on
CdM with 18 RBIs and third with a .354 batting average.
Maggard was second in the Pacific Coast League with a 1.56 ERA. He
went 6-4 with six complete games, including a no-hitter against
University March 21.
Both were named to the Newport-Mesa Dream Team, as well as
first-team all-league this year. Both also represented the South in
the Orange County All-Star game.
Maggard was the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year.
CdM finished 18-10 after losing to La Quinta in the quarterfinals
of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.
The Sea Kings were second in league with a 9-6 record against
Pacific Coast opponents.
Wells gets accolade
* SOCCER: Newport Harbor High product Zach Wells was named Major
League Soccer’s Player of the Week for the seven days ending Sunday.
The second-year goalkeeper who has started all 12 of the
MetroStars games posted his fourth shutout this season, making 14
saves in the team’s scoreless tie with D.C. United Sunday in East
Rutherford, N.J.
The 14 saves were one shy of the record Tony Meola set as
MetroStars’ keeper on April 5, 1997, also against D.C. United.
Wells has made 56 saves this season while allowing 11 goals -- a
0.92 goals-against average -- for the MetroStars (4-3-5) who are tied
for third with Kansas City in the Eastern division.
Wells, 24, set the UCLA career record with 269 saves and was named
College Cup Defensive Most Valuable Player during the Bruins’
national championship run in 2002.
Tars’ duo lauded
* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor High seniors Patrick Keehan and Greg
Miner were selected named All-Sea View League by the circuit’s
baseball coaches.
Keehan, a pitcher and infielder, was named first-team all-league
after he led the Sailors in most offensive categories.
He was second in the league with 10 stolen bases while also
leading the team in batting average (34 for 86 for .397), on base
percentage (.466), slugging percentage (.540), total bases (34),
doubles (seven) and runs scored (25).
Miner led the Sailors with 15 RBIs while hitting three home runs,
including two grand slams.
Aliso Niguel’s J.T. Heap, Foothill’s Justin Uribe and Woodbridge’s
Mike Anderson shared league MVP honors.
Four locals honored
* BASEBALL: Four Newport-Mesa players have been named All-Golden
West League by the circuit’s baseball coaches.
Costa Mesa High senior Alex Pisarski was selected a first-team
honoree, while teammate Jeff Waldron was a second-team selection.
Estancia’s Kane Curran and Taylor McClanahan were both second-team
picks.
Pisarski led the Mustangs with a 3.92 ERA and 12 doubles, was
second on the team in batting average (.353) and RBIs (15), and was
third with eight stolen bases.
Sage quartet all-league
* BASEBALL: Seniors Matt Loper and David Packard, as well as
juniors Bryan Kornsweit and Zach Milder were named second-team
All-Academy League by the circuit’s baseball coaches.
Loper’s four home runs led the Lightning and were the second-most
in the league. Loper, named a repeat first-team selection, led Sage
with a 4.36 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 48 innings. He was tops on the
team with 23 RBIS, four doubles, two triples and was tied for the
lead with 18 runs scored. His 10 stolen bases were second best on the
team.
Packard, a second-team all-league selection as a junior last year,
was second on the team with a 5.29 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 46 1/3
innings. Packard hit .318 with 10 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
Kornswiet, a second-team selection last year as a sophomore, was
second on the team with a .328 batting average and 12 RBIs.
Milder led Sage Hill with a .329 batting average as well as 13
stolen bases.
Four Sailors stand out
* LACROSSE: Newport Harbor High had four lacross players named
All-North League.
Senior Bobby Ward and junior Donnie Hoover were named first-team
all-league while senior Kyle Brown and sophomore Ryan Hanrahan each
earned second-team recognition.
The North defeated the South, 11-10, in overtime in the Orange
County Lacrosse Association All-Star game June 4 at Monte Vista High
in Newport Beach.
UCI’s Tybor shines
* SAILING: UC Irvine sailor Frank Tybor received honorable mention
in voting for the 2005 Ronstan All-American team.
The sophomore helpd UCI win the St. Francis intersectional, the
Charleston Spring intersectional and South Series 3.
The Anteaters also finished second at the 20th annual Rose Bowl
regatta.
Tybor was also named to the All-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
Yacht Racing Association coed team and was a UCI scholar-athlete.
Sea Kings’ JV No. 1
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High junior varsity boys
volleyball team claimed this season’s Pacific Coast League title and
finished the year 16-0, 29-1 including tournaments.
Over the course of the season, the Sea Kings went undefeated in
the University tournament to win the championship for the second
straight year; defeated Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in a three-game
sweep May 6; and reached the quarterfinals of the Newport Harbor
tournament concluding May 7.
CdM, coached by Zach Miller, includes Brian Baldwin, Baldwin,
Spencer Brown, Bryan Burke, Jeff Carlson, Scott Collins, Tony Jones,
John Joyce, Brad McCoy, Tom Solis, Sam Stafford, Ryan Thomas, David
Tomkinson and David Yi.
CdM seeks coaches
