To my sweet Dad,

You are sooooo special to us for sooooo many reasons, but mostly

because you make time for all the stuff we like to do, even if it’s

not your favorite thing!

Like every Saturday, taking me and Hannah roller skating, going

along on a trial ride when you’d probably rather be riding your iron

horse and not the real kind. We know that camping isn’t your idea of

a real vacation, but you hang in there every year for two or three

camping trips.

You are so much fun to be around all of the time, but mostly when

we have friends in for a backyard barbecue. You’re a great cook

(which is good ‘cause Mom’s not too crazy about spending time in the

kitchen). You are a patient teacher and Mom’s best friend (I know

because she told me).

Happy Father’s Day, Dad! We love you all the way to God and back!

I’m so lucky to have my dad. Whenever we’re together, he makes

everything so much fun. As I get older and have my own opinions, Dad

and I don’t always agree about things. But our disagreements don’t

hide our love for each other. I know Dad cares about me and wants me

to have the best. You’re an awesome Dad, you make me laugh and I love

that. Happy Father’s Day!

I think I have the best dad! When I was younger, he was always

there to listen if I ever needed to talk. He used to call me his

little princess. He exposed me to a lot of things through my

childhood. Our family vacations included motorcycle riding every

weekend, sailing to Catalina in the summer, ski trips to Brianhead

and Mammoth. And I know one vacation was for me because I loved

horses so much we went on a road trip to dude ranches to ride horses.

His name is MacGyver because he can build or fix anything. He just

recently converted a neglected duplex down by the beach into a

beautiful beach house that he renovated himself at the age of 65! He

is truly amazing! He and my mom now live within two miles of us, and

it’s so nice to have them so close by. Our girls are so lucky to have

both sets of grandparents so close by and can stop by and say “hi”

anytime. My dad had a triple bypass three years ago that really

scared me, and I am so glad he made it through. We are so fortunate

to have such a wonderful family, and I love you so much!

My dad is the best dad because he spends a lot of time with me. He

is always there for me. We go golfing together, go to the beach, go

to Disneyland and Sea World, and do a lot of other things! My dad

teaches Courtney (my sister) and I how to play golf, how to spar,

helps me with basketball and much more. My dad is a very smart and

well-skilled person. He knows what’s right and wrong. I love my dad!

My dad is the best dad is the whole wide world!!

To our dad, Kevin McCarthy,

You are such a special dad who puts his family first, a dad who

lets us see his love and hear his pride. You are a dad to count on

and to look up to.

Only a heart as big as yours could keep so many promises, teach so

many lessons, give so much and hold so many dreams. Only a dad as

good as you could be loved so very much!

Thanks for all the laughter, love and wonderful memories!

My dad, my champion,

He taught me to love and care for all creatures; to swim; to ride

a bike, a horse and a skateboard; to drive a go-cart, a car, a

motorcycle and a boat. All the while reminding me not to be

frightened as he applied mercurochrome to my cuts and scrapes,

turning tears to laughter as he decorated my wounds with funny

pictures and sayings. He continues to feel empathy for my pain,

relish in my achievements and remind me that he will always be there

for me with reassuring bear hugs. He is my greatest champion and

supporter and is an eternal optimist. He taught me that nothing was

impossible and has always been there to help me chase my dreams.

Dad, you have helped me be the woman I am today. You continue to

fill your families’ lives with laughter, affection, adventure, good

cooking, God’s love and so much more.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

My Daddy is the silliest daddy in the whole wide world. He does

anything I want him to. We like to sing Elvis songs together on my

karaoke. He tucks me in my bed every night and wakes me with kisses

every morning. He is very, very nice. He volunteers in my class and

tells my friends and me the funniest stories. He likes to take me

surfing and to ballet. He is the best daddy ever and I love him with

my whole heart. He’s my number one boyfriend.

It’s hard to express in a few paragraphs how great my dad is, for

my dad is awesome. My dad is my hero! My dad gives so much, no matter

what, he always has time for me. He supports me and is the one person

I know that I could always turn to and ask for advice. My dad is my

best friend; we always have fun together, like getting up at 5 a.m.

just to go surfing. My dad is my role model and he has never once not

been there for me. I love my dad more than I can express in words. If

there was a father of the year award, my dad would win every year,

‘cause he is the best dad a girl could ever have.

Happy Father’s Day, Daddy! I love you!

This will be my first fatherless Father’s Day, as my dad passed

away on Sept. 10, 2004. In honor of him, I would like to tell you

some of what made him great.

He taught me to pay attention. Details were my dad’s forte, and

often, if I must admit, to my dismay. As an engineer, he loved to

know the way things worked, and seemed to know just about everything.

Beware of asking him the time -- sure, you would find out, but you

would also find out the history of time and how to make a clock! But

in teaching me to pay attention to the often-overlooked details, he

taught me to appreciate a beauty, uniqueness and purpose in the world

around me that is only observed by paying close attention.

He instilled within me a love of tradition. Anything could become,

or be considered a tradition in my family. Fresh squeezed orange

juice was made every morning from oranges purchased at the farmer’s

market in Corona del Mar every Saturday after walking around Balboa

Island (counter clockwise) and having breakfast at Wilma’s. Some may

see that as a rut (which, for a time, I did) but I have come to

appreciate the rituals of our many traditions. They have rooted me,

and from that firm base of roots, have allowed me to grow.

He lived out a sense of hope and purpose. My dad considered his

cancer to be a speed bump on the road of life. In the midst of

chemotherapy, radiation or scans, he liked to comment that the view

from above the grass, looking down, was still better than being

underneath the grass looking up. When I asked him once how things

were going, his response was “Well, I am still going to get a drink

with free refills when I go to Baja Fresh.” Meaning: I’m not going to

give up yet. I hope that I have some of the resilience that he

demonstrated in his two-and- 1/2 -year battle with cancer. He was not

naive -- he knew the severity of his disease. But in the face of

that, he chose to live out of a place of hope.

He showed me how to die well. I know that might sound odd. The day

before he passed away, I asked my dad if he was afraid to die. You

should know that though my dad went to church faithfully every week,

he was not someone who you would consider religious in any outward

sense of the word. He responded to my question without hesitation:

“No, I am not afraid to die. I know where I am going. I have always

known. No, I am not afraid to die.” I’m the one training to be a

minister, and yet I was stunned by the matter-of-factness with which

he responded. My dad lived with all his life while he still could,

and when it came time to die he died peacefully, surrounded by

friends and family, as purposefully as he had lived.

For these reasons and so many more, I am grateful for my dad.

Dear Dad,

Thank you for all that you do for us: teaching basketball; being

an encouraging, honest coach; playing fair during one-on-one games;

coming to soccer games; quizzing for tests; driving places; taking us

on wonderful trips; giving awesome gifts; and always making us feel

better. Thanks for just always being there.

playing and dancing with me any time of the day; teaching me to play

My husband, Salvatore Surra, works hard all week as general

manager of the oceanfront Portofino Beach Hotel on the Balboa

Peninsula. However, no matter how tired he is from putting in long

hours, he always finds time to be a great father to our 4-year-old

daughter, Sicilia Surra. This may be the perspective of a biased

individual, since I am his wife, but I am convinced that after you

have read what I have written, you too will see that Salvatore is

indeed a wonderful father. If I could write all the things that made

Salvatore a great father, I’d end up with a novel. So, to keep it

short and sweet, I have written a top-10 list of what makes Salvatore

such a great dad.

1. He listens to little Sicilia with his heart and cares for with

her with his soul.

2. His hugs and kisses are a daily regimen of love.

3. He is mindful of little Sicilia’s wants and needs.

4. He can instantly morph into a Super-Dad-Jungle-Jim at any given

moment.

5. He revels in the joy of letting little Sicilia wake him up on

Saturday mornings by jumping on his back.

6. He lets little Sicilia drag him onto amusement park rides that

make him dizzy.

7. He helps little Sicilia clean her room, even after a long day

at work.

8. He lets little Sicilia help him cook in the kitchen.

9. He tucks little Sicilia in at bedtime with stories and prayers.

10. He takes his family everywhere that he can because he loves

us.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are messages from Pat McLaughlin’s

third-grade class at Mariners Elementary School in Newport Beach.

My dad is the greatest dad ever! Why? Well, he takes me on bike

rides and plays with me at the playgrounds. We set up holiday

decorations together and take them down. We go to friends’ houses and

pick them up. That’s why my dad is awesome!

GABE BREISCH

My dad’s the greatest dad ever. He always plays with me when I’m

sad and usually takes me away from video games and pitches me

baseballs. He sometimes embarrasses me, but I guess it’s his

idiosyncrasy. He’s pretty grumpy when he gets up in the morning, but

I just think he does it just to be nice later. My dad can be bad, but

he’s usually No. 1 on my list.

BRETT TAFOYA

What makes my dad so great is that in one whole day he took me out

to dinner, we went to my aunt’s house, and then went shopping. Then

on Saturday night my friend came over and had a sleepover. When I’m

sick, he gives me ice cream and 7-Up. That is what makes my dad so

great!

BRANDY JOYCE

My dad is the greatest dad ever. He plays games with me and bakes

cookies. He also watches TV with me. My dad takes me to the movies.

My dad is kind and loving. My dad loves me and takes care of me. He

is very fun. My dad takes me to theme parks. My dad helps me in math.

My dad barbecues for me. My dad puts money in my piggy bank every day

for me to save. My dad is a good baker. He takes me to the Discovery

Science Center. My dad teaches me how to use a computer. I love my

dad. My dad is awesome!

MEGAN PIERCE

My dad is gnarly! He takes me to practice hockey and football. He

even sometimes coaches my team in roller hockey. He is determined and

has courage in me. He cooks great pancakes. He is also really handy

with the barbecue. He is so awesome.

BRADY MORGAN

My dad’s great! Why my dad is so great is because he helps me with

my homework and reads with me at night. Another reason my dad is

great is because he takes me with him on my dog’s walk. Another

reason is because he loves me a lot. That is why my dad is so great.

KATIE CALDER

My dad is the best dad in the world. He does everything with my

siblings and me. He takes us swimming, to amusement parks and to Wild

Rivers. We like to eat outside by the pool while the barbecue flares.

My dad is like a huge, sweet, root beer float with extra vanilla ice

cream!

NATALIE CERNIUS

My dad is so cool. He tucks me in at night. My dad makes me laugh,

and he tells me funny jokes and stories. He is so nice and handsome.

He has nice hair and a nice sense of clothing. He lets me do fun

things. He plays with me and my mom. He taught me how to play Life. I

love him and he loves me.

funny too. He is so nice. I like when he takes me to lunch and

dinner. He is good at miniature golfing. He loves me and I love him.

HAILEY TARNUTZER

My dad is the best dad in the world. He is the best dad in the

world because he supports me in whatever I do. He encourages me to do

my best. My dad is always there for me when I need him. Another

reason that he’s the best dad is that we go mountain biking together.

We watch TV together and go surfing too. We play with the puppy

together. My dad is the best.

BRAD TAPFER

My dad is awesome! My dad is awesome because he cares for me, is

fun and never yells at me. Also, because he’s the best dad ever.

Another thing is he’s the most loving person to me. My dad is great.

NICHOLAS ROMERO

My dad is great. We go to the beach. He goes in the water with me.

We have fun. We also like to go to the stores. Then we go back to the

house and eat. My dad is awesome.

SARAH HOLLINGER

I think my dad is very great. He always helps me do everything on

my video or PC game. My dad kind of gets upset when I cheat on my PC

games, but he is good anyway. My dad likes to watch movies with me.

But sometimes he falls asleep in the movies because he goes to bed

early. It is a little commotion when my dad snores. My dad is a good

gardener. He can plant a flower as fast as a mouse running across a

medium-sized room. He gets stressed when my mom is stressed. My dad

is the best.

MASON MOODY

My dad is so cool because he buys me so much stuff. He got me an

alien. I love to get coffee with him every morning. I also like to go

to Disneyland and go to Dave and Buster’s with him. One more thing is

that he got a customized TV in the van that’s big and long. Another

thing is that we’re getting a newer house -- better than my friend’s.

That’s how cool my dad is.

takes me to B.J.’s when I’m being good. My dad helped me to learn how

to cook. My dad is awesome.

SYDNEY ELLIOTT-BRAND

My dad is the greatest dad in the world! He buys me a lot of cool

stuff, like a wide-screen computer and a big pool hideaway island. We

go in the pool together often and also play a game called EverQuest 2

on the computer together. He also takes me out to eat at great places

like Anjin and Choito. My favorite place he takes me out to eat is

Kura Sushi, the “revolving sushi bar.” My dad is awesome!

ALYSSA TAN

My dad’s so great because he takes me to Indian Guides and

motorcycle riding. We watch motorcycle racing at Speedway. But my

favorite thing of all is going to Glamis, a place to ride quads. I

like it because I get to be with my dad.

COLE CHAPIN

My dad is the greatest. My dad helps people. My dad is a mechanic,

so I help with the cars. My dad helps me with homework that I don’t

get. My dad, Jeff Frederiksen, is the most greatest and most caring

dad. He takes me to the park. That is my greatest and most caring

dad.

ROWAN FREDERIKSEN

My dad is so great. My dad understands me. He does remote control

cars with me. He takes me to the beach. He lets me watch “The

Our dad is so great because he takes us to the beach and the

new baby brother, Jensen, is going to be so excited. He doesn’t know

it yet, but he will soon find out that he has the best dad in the

world!

I love my dad for many reasons. He does so much for me, like take

me to places all around the world. Places such as Holland, India,

Peru, Belize, England, and I know there will be more. This is a

memory that stands out in my mind. I don’t know why because he’s done

it a million times, but this is a typical example of my dad. We were

in Peru in the city of Cuzco. I was allowed to buy one thing for

myself to bring home. I had already gotten two, a poncho and a

beanie. We were walking down the street and I saw this man making a

necklace. I thought it was gorgeous. My dad asked me if I wanted it,

and, of course, I said yes. My mom was annoyed at him because he

always tries to spoil us (my brother and me), but, of course, I was

happy. And I still have the necklace!

Also, when we are having Indian food or anything spicy, he will

make me a separate dish because he knows I don’t like it. He is also

the one who, when my mom says “no,” talks her into saying “yes.” If I

lived with my dad alone, I would be one of the most spoiled kids in

the world!

Happy Father’s Day, Pappa!

ANNEKE PAKVASA

I love my father because ...

I love my father for a whole lot of reasons. The most important

thing my father has taught me -- and I love him for it -- is that no

matter what, you should always be humble. He says the smarter you

get, the more humble you will get, and instead of putting yourself in

front of others, you will put others in front of you. He told me that

all through my life. Now every time I have a slip of the mouth, he

will take me to the corner and lecture (not really lecture) me on why

I shouldn’t brag. I am just starting to get why he tells me this

stuff. (I’m 12.)

One more thing I love my dad for is taking me on trips. We go on

trips to all the most exotic places, such as Costa Rica, Belize,

Peru, Mexico, India, the Netherlands and England. We go to these

places, and then we do all of the most fun stuff like hiking,

sightseeing, and piranha fishing in the Amazon River. I love my dad

because he got me into traveling, and now I want to go see the rest

of the world. He tells me that sometimes you should just let stuff

take its role and then surprising things can happen. I love my dad

for a whole bunch of stuff and these are just a few of them.

MISHA PAKVASA

*

My dad is my superhero. He is just like me, except he has lots

more hair. We wear the exact same, striped, multi-colored pajamas! He

has thousands of comic books from the old days, and we relax on the

couch reading them and watching James Bond and cartoons. He is the

grrrrrrrrr-eatest piano player and singer of all time! We sing all

kinds of songs ... Beatles, Beach Boys, Queen songs, and we write

songs too. He adores chocolate covered pretzels, and so do I. He is

beyond special to me!

*

What makes our dad, Rick Brown, special? There are too many

reasons to name!

One of them is how he supports us in sports. He has coached our

basketball and soccer teams and taught us soccer moves aside from

regular practices. He has taught me (Brittany) a ton of basketball

moves that I can use in games. He attends all games and as many

practices as possible.

Also, because he has three daughters, he has many years of Indian

Princess and camp-outs with little sleep ahead of him (and several

years behind him too). He is a good sport and takes us because he

wants to be with us. And despite the lack of sleep, he has a good

time.

There is someone in my life who has always been there for me and

this man is my father. Thanks, Dad, for being the great father you

are, and I love you always!

HEATHER

*

My father is one of the coolest dads on Earth. He will do anything

for you and takes pride in his work. I can only imagine how hard he

has to work for a family of seven, including a dog -- all that work

and he keeps us living in Newport Beach. He is one of the coolest

parents and people in the universe. He plays lots of sports including

competing in tennis at the All England Club in Wimbledon. When I need

work on playing sports, he will tell me exactly what to do and show

me how to do it, that is why he is the universe’s best dad.

Even with his old Mercedes, which we nicknamed Lurch, he still

makes sure that I arrive to school in style. He is always doing

things for all of his kids and he has never been a selfish person. My

friends say that my dad is the funniest person that they have ever

met, and he makes sure that we have fun. When I need help with

homework, he offers to work it out with me, at the same time he has a

2-year-old screaming, an 8-year-old asking him questions, and a

teenager asking him to drive her somewhere. He still pulls it off

because he is the universe’s best dad.

My dad and I like to barbecue a lot. He tells me barbecuing tips

so that one day I will be able to do this with my son and so that I

can remind him how when he is old. Our favorite food to cook is

salmon. He shows me how to manage making dinner with all of the

different things going on. Sometimes he lets me make things all by

myself. That is why he is the universe’s best dad.

I am going to go to high school next year, and he always says that

I am not going to want to do anything with him anymore because it is

not cool. But he is cool, and I will always play and learn things

from him. I will always love him even if he does embarrass me or

ground me.

And that is why he is the best dad in the universe.

Forty-five years ago, a brilliant scientist lost his wife to

cancer, and was left with three young children to raise by himself.

He was recruited by hospitals across the nation, yet he chose an

upstart hospital whose premise was to discover cures for catastrophic

children’s diseases. He felt his presence could make a difference at

this facility. This May, my sister and I attended the annual

lectureship in my father’s name where he was honored by several of

the world’s leading scientists. They shed praise on my father, for

his dedication and leadership in making St. Jude’s Children’s

Research Hospital what it is today, a leading hospital in treating

and curing children’s diseases.

While achieving this success, he married a woman who shared a

commitment to his family and blessed him with another child.

Together, they raised their children with the same beliefs he has:

striving to be the best you can no matter what curves life throws

you. I hope my young children will remember their grandfather for the

love and affection he bestowed not only upon them, but the children

he worked to find cures for. One day, I plan to bring them to St.

Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and show them this picture, and I

hope they will be as proud of him as I am. We love you, Dad.

mommy gets to stay home with us and we don’t have to go to a nanny, a

relative or day care.

You hug us, kiss our boo boos and help us look for our “mookies”

when they are lost. You cuddle with us in bed while we watch “Dragon

Tales” in the morning, and give us “ishy hugs” at bedtime.

Thank you for being the best daddy we could ever have!

Happy Father’s Day. We love you!

ADAM, 7, RYAN, 4, and MOMMY LANGEVIN

Please put my daddy in the newspaper. I want to wish him a very

Happy Father’s Day, and tell him that he is the best daddy in the

world. Thank you dad for everything you have done for us. You mean so

much to us, and we love you very much.

Love,

To my husband, Terry, on Father’s Day,

I am reminded of what a wonderful father you are to our darling

daughter every time I see her face light up when you get home and

hear her incredible laugh when you two are playing.

You are doing an amazing job with helping her to build confidence

and independence. I love you for being such a caring father and

supportive husband.

I want to thank you for making it so easy to create a balance

among making time as a family, as a couple, and as individuals. I

know it will be harder with our next little one coming soon, but I’m

looking forward to the challenge because you make it fun and

memorable.

All my love,

SUSIE

We love our dad because he takes us to get bagels in our jammies!

He has water balloon fights and watches all of our favorite movies

with us! We love you Dad -- bigger than the world.

* Play “ducky” with us.

* Carry us when it’s too far to walk.

* Come to every tee-ball game and practice.

* Play with us in the pool.

* Make special lunches for us.

* Take us to work with you on special days.

* Spend lots of time with us.

You are our superhero and the most incredible daddy ever.

Our dad, Matt McCormick, is the greatest dad in the world! He

makes our yard look beautiful with all of the roses and flowers that

he plants. He grows the best tomatoes, which we love to eat all

summer and fall. He makes the best cheeseburgers on our barbecue. We

also have a great tradition every Sunday night of making s’mores,

thanks to our dad. He is a wonderful water polo coach and teaches us

everything we need to know to have fun and win the game. Our dad got

us each a surfboard and taught us how to surf. We love going to the

beach with him! We love you very much, Dad!

Love,

KATIE, SHANNON, ALLY, TIM and HAYDEN

Happy Father’s Day to my very special dad, my hero.

I am so lucky to have such a cool dad like you. I can’t wait to

grow up and play ball with you, to go boating with you and to hear

the stories about when you were a little boy. Most of all, I can’t

wait to be just like you.

I love you, Daddy!

Love,

Dear Daddy (Jeff Locke),

You are the best dad in the whole wide world. Thank you for being

so nice to us. You are wonderful and a really, really good surfer.

My dad is a wonderful man. Born in Painter, Va., on Nov. 20, 1917,

Claude Wise Downing was the second in a family of six children. This

picture of him on his Harley from 1943 was just before he was drafted

into the Navy in World War II. I was 4 then, and it’s the first

address I can remember ... 1642 F St., Apt B, NE, Washington D.C. He

was such a wonderful free spirit and had a curiosity about so many

things in life.

I remember the blackouts and civil defense guards walking the

streets checking for light leaks. I would peer out waiting for my dad

to come home. I knew every plane in World War II, but my dad could

tell which plane was flying over by listening to its engines. I can

still do that if it’s a prop-driven plane. And fortunately, he did

come home as the war ended.

He loved parades and John Philip Sousa marching bands and would

take my younger brother and I to see them. Dad and I would walk down

to the Potomac to an old fish shanty to buy fresh clams and oysters

from 50-gallon drums. My mother and he would roller skate around

Capitol Hill with me. Our entertainment was listening to radio

programs, “Inner Sanctum,” Jack Benny, “Baby Snooks,” “Captain

Midnight,” “Mr. & Mrs. North,” “The Shadow,” “Crime Busters,” “The

Lone Ranger.” There were no TVs, malls or freeways. We played

whatever sport was in season in the streets. We played catch all the

time. When the cover came off the ball, my Dad taped it with black

electrician’s tape until that came off and then we’d buy a new ball.

In the coming years, he would eventually teach us baseball, football,

golf, tennis, horseback riding, an appreciation for East Coast

seafood, and he took us camping.

He went to work for TWA. In 1947, we moved to L.A. where he worked

for TWA until he was 65. He, my mother, brother and I were to travel

many places. How very fortunate we were. The 405 took their first

house ... it’s now the El Segundo onramp. The 105 took the next house

after they had moved a mile away.

Years ago, we would take a weekend ride to a town called Newport

Beach. It seemed like every time we did, we would ride this great

little ferryboat that held only three cars and a dozen people or so.

Such fond memories. To this day, it is one of my favorite experiences

in this town. I even know one of the admirals.

Through the years, he would visit me at Fort Ord, and in Paris. He

would give me great advice I never listened to. He and my mother have

been married 66 years with a two-year timeout before remarrying each

other. Last year, there was a phone call from them in their home in

Manhattan Beach. It was my mother. She said my dad wanted to know

what happened to Gordon, my brother (who had been living with them

for the last five years). His 10 minutes of clarity from Alzheimer’s

was like a call from another planet and caught me completely off

guard. It had been six months. As I choked back the tears and

wrenched to get the words out to him, I explained the lung cancer

that had taken his magnificent son’s life.

“Oh, I’m so sorry. That’s really too bad,” he said softly.

It had been 2 or 3 years since he’d been that lucid.

Last fall, they moved to Newport -- my mother in a condo and he

less than a mile away at an assisted-living facility behind Hoag. The

longest walk I take these days is down the corridor after visiting my

wonderful, remarkable father. I love you, Dad.

My dad is the best dad ever. No questions asked. He has brought so

much joy to our home and always shows he cares. My father tries his

hardest every day to make our home a happy one. He can be serious and

can joke a lot too. His ways of teaching have made my brother’s and

my life more successful. We both try our hardest and make him proud,

and we both look up to him. Through all the drama of my first year of

high school, I can come home and have someone to talk to. He

understands most the time and gives me good advice. Some of his

choices he has made for me make me very mad, but I know he does it

for my benefit. My dad wants me to make the right choices, and that’s

why my father is the best father ever. So, nobody could replace him.

weekends, and he loves being with us.

He always keeps his word.

Dad makes sure that we are always safe.

Dad has always worked so hard to make sure we are all taken care

He always takes us to our sports games and practices, even if it

means missing something for himself.

Dad always tries to help us with our homework, even if he doesn’t

know how to do it.

Our dad is the best dad in the world, and we love him!

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are messages from Jan Wood’s

fifth-grade class at Mariners Elementary School in Newport Beach.

Why My Dad Is Great

My dad is great. I’m assuming that you want to know why. Well,

I’ll tell you.

My dad is great because he’s helpful. If I ask him for help with

my homework, he immediately explains what I should do to figure out

the problem. He also teaches me things I will need to know later in

life. He taught me how to clean a pool, use the Internet, play

certain games, pull weeds and much more.

My dad is also great because he is funny. He is always ready to

crack a joke. Whenever I start a sports activity, or any other

activity for that matter, he gives me a new nickname. When I started

piano, I was Mozart. When I played basketball, he called me LeBron.

The list is endless! I hope you agree: My dad is awesome.

JACOB BARTON

My Dad

Everybody loves his or her dad, but the question is why? Why do

you think your dad is so great? Well, here are a few reasons why I

love my dad.

My dad is always busy, whether it’s doing his job or just going to

the grocery store. Even though he’s so busy, he still makes time for

Derek and me. That is just one thing he does that’s so great.

Sometimes I want to play with my brother Derek, but Derek doesn’t

want to play. So my dad volunteers to play with me.

He also buys me clothes. He drives me to my soccer games and

practices. He watches television with me. He reads with me. He helps

me with my homework. And most of all, he cares about me.

If you add up all the great things my dad does, I think you will

begin to notice how great my dad is. Have a happy Father’s Day, Dad.

SHANNON BOLER

The Greatest Dad Ever

I love my dad. There are so many things he does for me. Some are

really simple; some are huge. Some are when he supports what I do. I

don’t think about it very much, but he does so much for me.

He helps me at least once a day. Every time I’m playing in an

important game for a sport, if I look in a crowd, I’ll see him. Even

when it’s a little stupid thing, he’ll support me. He’ll protect me

from anything that’ll hurt me. That’s why, even when I yell at him, I

never really mean it.

LOGAN FRIEND

The Coolest Dad Ever

My dad is really cool. He does everything. He’s really nice, and

everyone thinks I have the coolest dad ever. I think he should get an

award or something as the best dad in the whole universe.

My dad skateboards. He isn’t good, but he still tries and can roll

around and push. Everyone else says I sound like I get embarrassed by

it because his or her dad would never do that in a million years. OK.

Here’s the scary part. He’s 52.

He also surfs. He’s better at this than skateboarding. He’s better

than me, even though that’s not hard to do. He can turn. He can also

nose ride. It’s really cool. I love my dad.

He is the coolest dad ever in the world and I don’t care what

anyone else thinks about it. He’s the best. He’s a used-car salesman

-- weird job. He owns Cove Motoring. His name is Paul, and he has

gray hair. He’s old, but I love him.

ROSS SCHWARTZ

What Makes My Dad So Great

What makes my dad so great is that he takes me to a lot of places

I like to go. He also helps me with a lot of things. My dad never

gets mad or yells at me. He said I help him not lose his temper.

If he has something I like, he will willingly give me some of

whatever he has. He does this because he is the greatest dad -- just

like I said. He is funny, nice, caring and sharing. He helps me with

a lot of things, like homework and a load of other things. He lets me

do a lot of things I like to do. See, I told you I have a great dad.

VICTORIA PARRINO

The Greatest Dad In The World

I love my dad! He is the best dad in the world. He provides a very

nice home for me and buys me food and clothes. He treats me very well

and cares for me 24-7. He is very kind and loving, and I am very glad

he’s my dad.

He works very hard so we can live in comfort, and we do. If I ever

need anything from my dad, he will do exactly what I need. He’s

great! He never forgets to say goodnight to me before I go to bed. I

always enjoy when he gets home from work, because he gives me a big

hug and kiss. I love him so much! Happy Father’s Day!

MADDIE ERDOSSY

My Dad

My dad is the greatest man who ever lived. He is the great father

of Blake, Kaitlynn, Brett and Lantz. He gets up at 5 a.m. so he can

work out and get to work on time. He works very hard so his family

can have nice things. He coaches all of my sports teams. My dad is

Lantz Bell. Have a happy Father’s Day.

BLAKE BELL

No. 1 Dad

What makes my dad so great is his smile

He makes me laugh for a long, long while

He tickles me on Tuesdays

And we have lots of fun on Fridays

On holidays we have barbecues and eat

And all of my friends and family run in the pool with bare feet

We make a lot of noise

But we’ll make even more with the new baby boy

He’ll be just like you

But with a smaller size shoe

He’ll be in the family forever

And we’ll all be happy together

Dad, I hope you know you’ll have a great son

And he’ll also think you’re No. 1

ALEX FARAH

The Greatest Dad Ever

What makes my dad so great is he is always there for me. Whenever

I’m bored, he’s always up to playing a game with me. He has also made

me a better soccer player. He’s been one of my coaches ever since the

second season I played. He makes it more fun for me to play soccer.

My dad is one of the best dads in the world. He is funny, nice and

many more good things too. He always has made life more fun for me. I

am glad I have my dad for a dad. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

ALLISON SCHELIN

My Dad

My dad’s name is Robert, but we call him Bob. He goes to work at

PFC, Porteous Fastener Company. Porteous is our last name, and my

grandpa, Bud, started the company. If my dad didn’t work, I could

play with him all day.

What makes my dad so special is that he plays all my sports with

me.

We play baseball and football together. We also play pass lacrosse

nets. You’re the best dad ever! Also, I love when we play tag and

push each other into the pool. But, best of all you’re my dad, and I

love you.

Also, dad, I love how you take us on trips to exotic places or

not-so-exotic places, such as Lake Tahoe, Mexico, Florida, Colorado,

Wyoming, Oregon, Hawaii and many more. My favorite place to go with

you is Lake Tahoe or Hawaii. I wish we could go there all of the

time. Happy Father’s Day.

Love,

MATT PORTEOUS

My Dad

My dad is the best dad in the world. He doesn’t care if people

think he is weird or something like that because he doesn’t get

embarrassed at all. He is his own unique person. He always knows how

to fix things when they’re wrong. He spoils us and takes us on trips

very, very often.

He loves ice cream. That’s probably why I love ice cream too. He

is very funny and makes me laugh every time I see him, even when he’s

at work. He works for an audio-visual company because he has a very

strong sense of hearing and so do I. My dad and I have a lot in

common, and I’m glad that I do.

CASSIDY LITTLETON

My Great Dad

My dad is very forgiving and nice to everyone he knows. You would

love how caring my dad is to people all around him. Getting used to

him is pretty easy because he engages in a lot of conversations

between people every minute of the day. Really, I think he is the

best dad in the world to me, and I love him very much. Even though I

can get mad at him sometimes, I still love him as much as I had

before because we always make up easily. After we get in a fight, I

will make up first because I know that he is feeling as bad as I am

that same second. Toughness is what he is a lot, and he can be

tougher than I can ever be, my brother can climb on him and he won’t

say a word. Doing chores like cleaning his room, putting away his

shoes, and things like that I have in common with him. After the day

is over, he will tuck me into bed, and I always feel safe during the

night because he is in the house with me. Dads are great, but I think

my dad is the best one of all!

DELANEY BELL

What Makes My Dad So Great

What makes my dad so great is that he knows what every car is.

When I say, “Wow, look at that car,” he says, “Yes, that’s an

Infinity G45.” It really amazes me that he knows practically what

every car is. He knows what old cars are too. He’s great with cars.

What makes my dad so great is that he can help solve problems. He

is a fair dad. He is the best dad. Happy Father’s Day!

KELLIE CONANT

My Dad Is the Best Dad in the World

My dad is the greatest and funniest dad in the world. My dad makes

my family and me laugh because he thinks he is a comedian. He is also

nice to me, but he still disciplines my siblings and me a little bit.

My dad buys me everything and some things I want.

My dad has coached my soccer team for three years, and has taught

me a lot. He takes my family and me on the greatest vacations. My dad

is also the greatest dad because he is teaching my sister and me how

to surf and any other sport that my sister and I want to play. He

supports my sister and me in all the sports we are in, and he is

always there for me. I love my dad so much! Happy Father’s Day!

MADISON WOOTERS

What Makes My Dad So Great

My dad is so great because he’s open to doing whatever my brothers

and I would enjoy doing. He’s really good help in homework;

especially in math and editing my writing, which is a great help to

me.

My dad is very kind to me and helps me to improve on the sports

I’m involved in. He really helps the most in basketball though. He

was the one who taught me how to play, and look at me now. Thanks to

him, I’m playing on an advanced basketball team and I’m still getting

better and better because of him.

Whenever my family watches comedies, he’s always there to laugh

with me. We have fun watching the silly or goofy movies he picks out,

and he’s good for picking the best movies. They always turn out to be

the greatest movies, rated a 10 in my mind.

The real reason my dad is the greatest though is because he acts

like himself, which I’m comfortable with, because he has a great

attitude. My dad is really the best dad a person could ask for! Happy

Father’s Day!

CONNOR LEGGETT

My Great Dad

There are a lot of things that make my dad great. He works every

day but is always willing to do something with me after work. We play

catch a lot and sometimes play soccer. He is also very cooperative.

He doesn’t like skateboarding, but sometimes he will play, and he’s

pretty good. But he’s really good at football. We play a lot, and

it’s really fun.

He’s also really nice and caring. He doesn’t make me do chores,

just hold a tool or something while he’s hanging a picture. He acts

really tough, but if I’m hurt or something, he’s always there for me.

So those are a few things that make my dad great.

Have a great Father’s Day!

ANDREW SIEMS

The Best Dad in the World

My dad is the best because of all the wonderful things he does

with me. He helps me with my homework and makes great dinners we eat

together. He lets me shoot hoops on the basketball hoop when I get

really bored and comes out and shoots hoops with me.

He takes me to the public pool on a hot sunny day. We go to fun

places like Boomers or Dave & Busters. We will buy a brand new dog or

go get some food for dinner. He’s really great because he lets me

sleep in late. He buys us fancy houses and new video games. But, the

greatest thing that makes him great is that when we do something, we

always have fun. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

GRAY BERMAN

Why Is My Dad so Great

My dad is the best. He spoils me tons. He plays soccer with me and

he gets me candy. When my dad plays soccer with me, it’s lots of fun!

When my dad gets mad, he comes to me, and I calm him down with a face

that I have. My dad goes to my soccer games; he is very energetic and

plays a lot with us at the beginning, but during the game he is very

serious looking.

My dad is very nice and funny. When we first got our puppy, he

didn’t want her. Now he goes everywhere with her. My dad gets me

anything I want. He got a new Escalade; it is black and very clean.

He got it for the whole family, but now he is calling it his car. My

dad acts like a teenager, but he knows that he isn’t. That is why my

dad is so great! Have the best Father’s Day, fantastic Dad!

CHRISTINE JACQUES

My dad is so great! He does so many wonderful things. He plays

tetherball with me, takes me to the movies, lets me play with

friends, and many other great things. He lets me have friends over

too. When we play tetherball, he plays hard and always lets me win.

He also takes me shopping sometimes for new clothes. My dad is loving

and kind and always has a twinkle in his eye. Have a fantastic

Father’s Day!

Lots of love,

GRETCHEN

Awesome Dad

My dad is the greatest dad in the whole world. He is great because

he works and gets money to buy me clothes, food, toys, tickets to the

movies and other awesome things. My dad is a great tennis player. He

always plays, and when he is in a tournament, I watch him. He is also

a great driver. He drives me everywhere, like the movies, sometimes

school, to a friend’s house and to get lunch or dinner. He buys me a

lot candy. He also pays for my dental bill. My dad is the coolest,

nicest, awesomest, greatest dad in the world. I love my dad more than

anything.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Love,

MILES

My Wonderful Dad

My dad is so great because of all he does for me. He teaches me

the values of life and inspires me to do wonderful things, like

skateboarding or surfing. He helps me with all my problems. Lectures

may not be the most fun, but they will get me further in life, for

sure. He also makes me happy with things to solve my troubles and dry

my tears, or he can buy me great things to make me smile all day.

That’s my dad. Love you dad. Have a nice Father’s Day.

Love,

AMANDA

What Makes My Dad so Great

Who is there when I get an award for school? Who has made every

single one of my brother’s baseball games and Cub Scout meetings,

even though he scrambles to get everything ready and get there on

time? Who, you may ask? Well, it’s none other than my dad. My dad is

a great dad and a wonderful husband. You may even call him the

world’s No. 1 dad. That’s how great he is. He works all day, but

still has time for sports, homework, and other after school

activities. He helps me with my states and capitals. He helps my

brother with his homework, and he has a lot. He tucks me in when my

mom isn’t home. That’s what makes my dad so great. Have a great

Father’s Day.

Love,

ERICA

What Makes My Dad So Great

What makes my dad so great is that he always is nice and cares for

me a lot too. He always tries to make me happy when I am sad or makes

me laugh. My favorite thing to do with my dad is go to our favorite

place to eat, which we both love. We always go there on the weekend.

My dad is smart and always helps me with my homework. He helps me

with the things that are hard for me. He is always there for me. My

dad works and still always has time for me. There are some things

that make my dad so great! Happy Father’s Day!

Love,

TAYLOR DITTOE

What Makes My Dad So Great

My dad is great. He helps me with my homework. My dad is the

moneymaker in the family. He rides his bike with me on the weekends.

Last, he comforts me when I am sad.

My dad is one of the most important people in my life. He goes to

work. Afterward, he still has time for me. That is what makes my dad

so great. Happy Father’s Day.

Sincerely,

PATRICK CONWAY

My Dad

My dad is great. He is a really nice guy. My dad is always trying

to make things a whole lot better when it’s really bad. He’ll always

be there to cheer you up when you’re sad. He’s a great dad.

My dad is really fun. He loves to play catch or swim or do other

fun things. He is always ready to have fun. I would never trade my

dad for anyone else.

GRANT WENSLEY

My Great Dad

My dad is so great because he helps me understand how to do a hard

math problem. He is patient when I really don’t understand how to do

it and gives me tips on how to do it well and how to check it. I

always understand how to do it after he helps me.

He plays fun games with my brother and me. He doesn’t play easy on

me, so it is more fun. He plays soccer, tag, and lots of other fun

games with us. He is the best dad in the world. Happy Father’s Day!

LUCIE WEBB

My Great Dad

My dad is the best dad in the world. Why? Because he is like a

friend. He knows how to snowboard really well. He can do lots of

tricks like flips. He surfs the Wedge when there is a swell. That is

when it is really big. He can skateboard pretty well, but he tries

his best at everything. He even taught me how to kick-flip. He takes

me to movies, like “Lords of Dogtown.” My dad is the best dad ever.

He is my best friend too.

ETHAN MURRAY

Why My Dad Is so Great

There are many reasons why my dad is such a great dad. Here are a

few. The first reason why my dad is so great is because he gets home

from work lots of days to take me to my sporting events. The second

reason my dad is so great is because he is always nice and generous

to me. He helps me with my homework and other things too. The third

and final reason is he always plays with me when I am bored. Whenever

I am bored, he will play basketball with me. That is why my dad is a

great dad.

CONOR SWEENEY

The Best Dad

My dad is the best dad in the whole world. He is funny and cool.

He surfs with me in the morning before I go to school. The best part

about that is what when we go, we wake up early and eat breakfast

before we go. I have so many reasons, but I doubt they will fit on

this page. The thing I love the most about him is that he live me

dearly and for that, I love him back. I know he is the best dad in

the world and you should think so, too.

GENEVA WALTERS

My Super Dad

My dad is the best dad in the world. He likes to go to the beach a

lot and go surfing. My dad is nice, funny and he likes to play

around. He likes to have a lot candy. Candy is his favorite, and ice

cream. He likes to build stuff for me. Whenever he is bored, he likes

to go outside and he skateboards with me and, sometimes, he just

watches. It is really fun. That’s why I love my dad and he is really

super and fantastic.

Our uncle Dennis Gage,

There are many different things that make our uncle very special,

but for right now, we will list four.

1. He is strong. Whenever we need to lift something he will help.

2. He is funny. He always makes us laugh.

Our Dad, Doug

Hi, I’m Max, a 12-year-old boy who wants to explain why he has the

best dad ever. My dad isn’t just loving and kind, but he has time for

me, even though he is very busy at work. We do a lot of fun things

together, like fly airplanes, play soccer, play chess and go on Boy

Scout camp outs. He sometimes coaches me in soccer games and inspires

me to do my very best. He is very funny and can always give you a

laugh, especially when you need one. I don’t know how I could live

without him. He is always very nice to me, and he emphasizes trying

your best. He’s the best dad in the world!

I’m Max’s sister, Nikki, a 10-year-old girl who wants to tell you

the same thing. My dad is the best lawyer that I know, but he is also

the best dad. He helps me on my homework, but doesn’t just tell me

the answers; he helps me understand the hard problems that I need

help on. He comes to all my soccer games, which are sometimes very

far away, or at least he tries. He can make anyone laugh or totally

crack up by switching around words of a song, or saying something

funny. He is willing to taste something that I made. I love sewing,

and whenever I finish making something, he is very proud of me. I am

also proud, because I have the best dad ever!

I’m Max and Nikki’s sister, Sierra, and I’m 5 years old. My dad is

the best dad ever because he taught me to ride a bike without

training wheels, he plays beanie babies with me, and he jumps on the

trampoline with me. He taught me to do drop kicks in soccer when he

was coach for my soccer team. He’s always proud of me for doing my

performances in dance, and plays and piano. In the pool, he lets me

have a boat ride on his back. He loves me very much and every night

he tells me that.

We three kids are the luckiest kids because he is the most loving

dad!

My dad is the best dad in the world. He has six kids, including

two teenagers and a baby. With all that, he still finds time to help

me with homework and stuff. He can build mini Soap Box Derby cars and

rain gutter regatta boats. My dad is the best at everything,

including woodworking. That’s why I love him.

Our father, David Hertzberg, has so many wonderful qualities that

make him such a great dad. He never complains about anything, and he

has such a positive outlook on life. Every morning before school, he

makes us breakfast. His specialty is oatmeal with an array of fruit,

nuts and spices added. He also treats our mom like a queen and helps

out with many household chores, since our mom works full-time outside

the home. We love our dad very much and hope to marry a man just like

him some day.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Our Bapa, Bob Wynn

We wish that all of our friends could have a Bapa like ours. He

has lots of fun toys and always has us over to see cool things at his

house, like the bee man and the beehive that he took out. That was so

cool. He loves to fly his remote control airplane and drive his

remote control car really fast. He even lets us (Patrick and

Nicholas) drive his car, and it is loud and fast. He gives us

butterscotches all the time, especially when we sit with him at

church. We like to sit with him all the time. He teaches us about

World War II airplanes and he takes us out to Chino airport to see

them. Our little sister Kate even loves airplanes and waves every

time she sees or hears one. He has lots of airplanes hanging in the

room where we sleep when we have sleepovers so we can look at them

all night. We love him a lot. Happy Father’s Day, Bapa!

Our dad, dr. Steve

Our dad is the best dad. We cannot wait until he gets home every

night from fixing teeth because he wrestles with us and fixes us ice

cream with bapas (M&Ms;) on top for treats after dinner. Then he

either reads “Go, Go, Go” to Kate, or does “Once Upon A Time” for us

(Patrick and Nicholas) about when he was a little boy. Then he gives

us drinks of water when Mommy says that he shouldn’t, and he checks

on us many times. He teaches us to pick up our toys before we go

anywhere and taught us this spring how to surf. Mom still needs a few

lessons, but he is really nice to her too. We love you, Daddy! Happy

Father’s Day!

Our Dad, Charlie Durnian, is the greatest dad ever!

I know, I know, everyone thinks their dad is the best ... but ours

is, for a lot of reasons! He was always very cool in high school and

college, but then he got married, lost all his hair and now goes to

work every day to make a good living for my sister and I. He wears

his company hats (quite goofy) and sits on the phone all day, yelling

at people for business! He wears his cowboy boots and uses words like

“groovy” and “square.” He tries to embarrass us by dancing, but then

while dancing, he tweaks his neck and has to sit on the sofa all

night.

He looks at us with his goofy grin and says, “Your dad’s turning

into an old dud, huh?” We just laugh and say, “Yeah Dad, but we still

love you!”

It’s true, no matter how goofy and weird our dad acts, that’s

exactly what makes him so special and fun to be with, and we wouldn’t

change him for anything! Happy Father’s Day, Dad; we love you!

XOXOXO,

NATO and GABO (NATALIE and

GABBY DURNIAN)
