JUNE 20

Irrelevant Week, a Celebration of the Underdog or “doing something

nice for someone for no reason,” started 30 years ago when the last

draft choice of the National Football League was brought to Newport

Beach and treated like a celebrity while raising money for local

charities.

This year, Mr. Irrelevant is Andy Stokes, a tight end from William

Penn University, selected #255 by the world champion New England

Patriots.

Funds raised this year will help the Orange County Burn Assn., a

nonprofit organization dedicated to providing recovery programs for

burn survivors and their families. The first event, a welcome party

for Mr. Irrelevant, will be held at 5 p.m. at the Newport Dunes

Waterfront Resort, 1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport Beach. Cost is $15,

includes food. Information: (949) 263-0727.
