Corona del Mar resident Scott Davis and his father Gordon Davis
regained their familiar role as champions Sunday at the 11th annual
United States Tennis Association national father and son doubles
championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The Davis duo, which had won four straight titles at this event
before missing last year’s tournament, defeated James and Paul
Settles, 6-4, 7-5, in the final of the super seniors division
(fathers age 70 and older).
In the seniors division (fathers ages 60-69) final, Newport Beach
resident Michael Carter and father Allan Carter, beat Joe and Joseph
Zerboni from San Diego, 6-1, 6-4.
Tars’ Draganza shines
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High junior Natalie Draganza won a two-hole
playoff Saturday to earn alternate status for the United States Golf
Association junior girls championships, scheduled to begin July 18 at
Eagle, Idaho.
Draganza, a three-time Sea View League girls golf champion, shot
76 at Coyote Del Malpais in Grant, N.M., before winning in the
playoff.
No-hitter keys win
* BASEBALL: Cody Stoddard and Levi Stillman combined on a
four-inning no-hitter to lead the Costa Mesa National Little League
Minor A Dodgers to a 12-0 mercy-rule-shortened win over the Fountain
Valley Angels in the quarterfinals of the District 62 Tournament of
Champions Saturday at Wardlow Park in Huntington Beach.
Stoddard pitched three innings and Stillman pitched one.
Nathan Frank hit a three-run home run and Brian Jolivette had
three hits to pace the Dodgers, who advance to the semifinals tonight
at 5, also at Wardlow Park.
Dodgers Jeff Carlyle, Dave Cornelius, Dirk Holland, Charles
Nelson, Armando Trujillo, Brad Wilson and Ryan West all had at least
one hit.
In other District 62 results Saturday: The Costa Mesa American
Minor A Red Sox were eliminated in the quarterfinal. The Red Sox
defeated Westminster, 11-3 in the first round Tuesday. In that game,
Erik Kjohs was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, while Kevin Salyer and Abel
Huerta had two hits and two RBIs and Ryan Weber drove in two and
pitched three shutout innings.
Jeffrey Duplex also pitched two no-hit innings.
