Laguna Art Museum is looking for new members for its Docent Corps,

an essential group of individuals who conduct informative tours and

educational outreach about the museum’s exhibitions for adults,

children, and a variety of schools and organizations.

An informational tea will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11,

and weekly provisional training will begin in October.

African choir to perform Sunday

The Africa University Choir will perform in a free concert at

Laguna Beach Methodist Church from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The choir will

present traditional and contemporary songs from several African

musical traditions, in English and in African languages.

The university is a United Methodist institution in Old Mutare,

Zimbabwe. The choir, which includes blended male and female voices,

toured the Eastern United States last year to sellout crowds. This

year they are touring the Western states from Washington to Texas.

The church is located at 21632 Wesley Dr. in So. Laguna (across

from the Montage Resort & Spa). Donations to offset the cost of the

Stone-carving

class at college

Laguna College of Art & Design is offering a six-week class in

stone carving from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, June 25 through

July 30.

Marvin Johnson and Joseph Sovella will teach techniques of this

time-honored art form using both hand and pneumatically driven tools

working in a variety of available stones. Classes will work outdoors

sculpting stone into forms of almost any size or shape. Technical

skills will be taught as part of the art process and no prior

experience is necessary. Class is appropriate for beginners to

advanced.

Student gallery opens Thursday

Gallery 821, the Laguna College of Art & Design Student Gallery,

will open with an Opening Artist Reception at 7p.m. Thursday. The

public is welcome. The Gallery is open through Aug. 14.

Gallery 821 is an off-campus exhibition center located at 821

Laguna Canyon Road in the Festival Center.

Sawdust grand opening July 1

Laguna Beach Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider will cut the red

ribbon and officially open the 2005 Sawdust Art Festival at 10 a.m.

Friday, July 1.

Laguna Beach residents are invited to come to opening day for free

as part of the Sawdust’s new First Fridays Free (for Laguna Beach

locals) program.

Laguna Beach residents with ID will be admitted for free all day,

from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., on the first Friday of each month the

Sawdust is open -- July 1, Aug. 5 and Sept. 2. The 2005 Sawdust Art

Festival features 210 Laguna Beach artists.

The festival is located at 935 Laguna Canyon Road.

Festival artists exhibit at mall

The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters is joining once

again with South Coast Plaza for a special satellite art display, to

be presented in Jewel Court at the plaza in Costa Mesa.

The exhibit runs through Sunday. South Coast Plaza hours are

Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The exhibit will include artwork from the Festival of Arts

permanent art collection and local artists, as well as rarely seen

sets and costumes from the Pageant of the Masters. The installation,

curated by Laguna Beach artist Mike Tauber, features the work of

Randy Bader, Gavin Heath, Mark Kerckhoff, Regina Jacobson, Troy

Poeschl, Carolyn Reynolds, Greg Riley, Miriam Shelton, Dan Skaggs,

David Speck, Shockley, John Warren, Scott Young and many other

notable festival artists.

On the weekends, Festival of Arts artists will be demonstrating a

variety of art techniques from noon to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m. at

Jewel Court at South Coast Plaza. A concierge table will be staffed

daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. offering information and free gate

passes to the Festival of Arts. Pageant tickets are also still

available for purchase.

The Festival of Arts runs July 5th through Sept. 1 -- admission is

$7 -- and the Pageant of the Masters runs July 7th through September

-- tickets are $15-$80.

This year’s theme is “On The Road -- A Crash Course in Art and

Popular Culture.” Proceeds support the arts in Orange County.

‘Step Into Liquid’ screens Saturday

The Laguna Beach Film Society will present a free outdoor showing

of the 2003 surf film, “Step Into Liquid,” at 8 p.m. Saturday at

Heisler Park.

Director Dana Brown will be present to discuss the making of the

film.

Attendees are encouraged to bring beach chairs and picnic dinners
