Reaching a benchmark

The end of the Steve Bromberg years on the Newport Beach City Council

became official, with his last meeting on June 14, but Friday

afternoon the former mayor officially took his seat as a judge on the

Orange County Superior Court.

“I will not disappoint any of you, a least I sure hope I don’t,”

Bromberg told a crowd of about 125 people at the close of the

ceremony.

The enrobing and swearing-in, held in the ceremonial court room of

the Superior Court, included speeches about Bromberg by his now

former colleague, Ken Yaeger, former Newport Beach Mayor Dennis

O’Neil and Newport Beach City Manager Homer Bludau. While there were

a few jokes at Bromberg’s expense, the speakers spent the majority of

the time talking about why he would make an excellent judge.

Retired Supreme Court Justice John Arguelles then called Bromberg

and his wife, Ronnie, forward for the swearing-in. She placed his

judicial robe on his shoulders.

“Snaps,” Bromberg said jokingly as he settled into his new office

attire.
