Don DuBois of Newport Beach beat Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga, 2 and
1, in 35 holes of match play to win the 94th California amateur
championship Saturday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
DuBois birdied the second hole and Bramlett bogeyed the eighth,
10th, 11th and 12th holes to give the 46-year old a five-hole lead.
Bramlett birdied the 13th and 14th holes but bogeyed the 18th to
give DuBois, a member of Big Canyon Country Club, a four-hole lead
headed into the afternoon 18-hold round.
DuBois bogeyed the first hole but birdied the second hole to
maintain a four-hole advantage.
Bramlett, 17, birdied the fourth hole and DuBois birdied the sixth
before Bramlett made a run.
Bramlett birdied the par-3 seventh hole as well as the 11th and
12th holes to bring DuBois’ lead to one hole.
DuBois had never advanced past the quarterfinals in almost 30
years of participating in the tournament.
