“I will not relinquish it. We are going to fight.”

-- Rodolphe Streichenberger -- founder of the Newport Beach-based

Marine Forests Society -- about an underwater reef next to the

Newport Pier. The California Supreme Court ruled that the California

Coastal Commission is constitutional, meaning the commission’s

decision about removing Streichenberger’s reef will stand.

“I think a nonprofit organization can raise the money from private

sources and other sources to finish the job. Otherwise I think the

facility will sit there -- probably for a number of years -- not

being completed, and the public still won’t be able to use it.”

-- John Campbell, state Senator for Newport-Mesa, after he had

proposed legislation to have allow a nonprofit group to take over

restoration of the 46 cottages at Crystal Cove.

“We probably get a better person appointed than we would elected.

We know what we’re looking for.”

-- Tod Ridgeway, Newport Beach City Councilman, on the process by

which the council appoints applicants to vacated council seats.

“As far as what I’d really like to sink my teeth into, it’s

getting the general-plan update completed. I think that’s the most

important thing for this city.”

-- Ed Selich, who was appointed Tuesday to the Newport Beach City

Council seat vacated by Steve Bromberg. Selich for 10 years had been

on the city’s Planning Commission.

“I think everyone’s pulling together to make that center really

viable.”

-- Keith Scheinberg, of KSDB Inc., who wants to open a Mexican

restaurant called Chronic Cantina at Triangle Square, on news that

the retail center has hired a new leasing agent.

“I don’t think I’ve come off my plateau yet.”

-- Merle Hatleberg, the founder of the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen,

which received a donation this month from Newport Beach resident Ed

Eaton that allows it to pay off its mortgage.
