Tennis is tops with NAIA run

The tennis team’s trip to the quarterfinals of the NAIA tournament in

May provided the crowning accomplishment of the 2004-05 school year

for Vanguard University men’s athletics.

Led by junior Andreas Guertner and sophomore Dieter Weislmair,

both first-team All-NAIA selections, the No. 5-seeded Lions defeated

Shorter College of Georgia, 5-1, in the second round before falling

to No. 4 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical, 5-0, in the quarters.

Guertner was also selected to the All-Golden State Athletic

Conference team while senior teammate Calle Holmgren was named an

All-GSAC scholar-athlete with a 3.73 GPA.

Coach Mattias Johansson was the GSAC Co-Coach of the Year with

Azusa Pacific’s Mark Bohren, and the Lions finished the season 16-6.

The GSAC co-champion soccer team reached the NAIA Region II

semifinals before bowing out to Azusa Pacific, 5-2. The team finished

the year 16-5, 9-1 in conference.

Senior Matthew Hess was named GSAC Player of the Year, while

Vanguard head man Randy Dodge was named GSAC Coach of the Year.

Seniors Nathan Kramer, Armando Ortiz and Efrain Salcedo were

All-GSAC honorees.

Senior Brandon Shaw finished second in the 800 meters at the NAIA

outdoor track and field championships in the spring to earn

All-American status.

Also the GSAC 800 champion, Shaw finished the NAIA 800 final in 1

minute, 51.62 seconds, .58 behind Virginia Intermont’s Elkana

Chepsiror.

Meyer helped lead the cross country team to a sixth-place finish

at the GSAC finals in the fall. Meyer finished 10th in 26:42.52 and

was named All-GSAC.

Led by junior Brian Kim (14.8 points per game), the basketball

team finished 10-19, 5-15.

Junior Leon Rosborough averaged 11.8 points per game.

The baseball team was 13-32, 9-2.

Senior Nikolaus Crouch hit .301 and was drafted in the 26th round

by the Chicago Cubs.
