Lewis at South Coast Plaza

Carl Lewis, a nine-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field, is

scheduled to make an appearance Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the

Swatch store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa.

Lewis, a former sprinter and long jumper, will be giving

instruction on simple ways to stay fit for the summer.

UCI baseball camp

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine coaching staff will play host to a youth

baseball camp for boys and girls ages 6 to 13 at Anteater Ballpark

July 5-28.

The camp will be led by Anteaters Coach Dave Serrano, who was the

national Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004 at Cal State Fullerton,

prior to coming to UCI.

Serrano and his staff will instruct campers on fundamentals,

individual skills, team strategy, infield and outfield play,

pitching, baserunning, sliding and double plays.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and offers a seven-to one

instructor to camper ratio.

The cost is $250, but a discount is available by registering two

or more in the same session, or being a part of the UCI

Faculty/Staff/Alumni Association.

Complimentary extended care is available from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.,

and from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Activities include board and field

games.

Vanguard hires trainer

* ATHLETICS: Darin Voigt has been hired as head athletic trainer

at Vanguard University.

Voigt, who worked previously at UNLV and El Dorado High, replaces

Chris Conner, who served six years.

Voigt earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and athletic

training at Cal Poly Pomona and a master’s in kinesiology and sports

medicine at UNLV.

In addition to his time at UNLV and El Dorado, he worked at Kitsap

physical therapy and sports performance clinics in the state of

Washington.

Sailors seek trainer

* HELP WANTED: Newport Harbor High is looking for an athletic

trainer for the upcoming school year.
