Pony

The Outback Steakhouse baseball team finished second in the

Newport Harbor Baseball Association Pony division following a

three-game series loss to Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa.

Outback finished the season 20-10. Included on the team are David

Penner, Nate Tegel, Jack Yeager, Alex Rios, Daniel Norris, Zach

Baldwin, Dylon Gravelle, Darren Gude, Hunter Freeman, Alex Maddox and

Austin Deyan.

UC Irvine camp

UC Irvine and the baseball coaching staff is offering a Prospect

Camp for players entering ninth through 12th grade at Anteater

Ballpark, July 18-21.

The program focuses on individual development along with team

play, and will feature daily practices and competitive games.

The Prospect Camp has only one session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The camp is $250, with discounts available by being a member of

the Faculty/Staff/Alumni Association, or by registering two or more

players for the same session. For a $25 fee, lunch will be included.

SAILING

This year’s Governor’s Cup, the premier international junior match

racing sailing championship in the U.S., is July 18-23 with event host Balboa Yacht Club and Newport Harbor Yacht Club among the

12-team field.

Seventeen teams applied for the 39th annual event, open to sailors

age 19 or younger. The field includes five teams from Australia,

including defending champion Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and one

from Finland.

The participating clubs include Balboa Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht

Club of Australia, King Harbor Yacht Club (Redondo Beach), Newport

Harbor Yacht Club, Nylandska Jaktklubben (Helsinki, Finland), Royal

New Zealand Yacht Squadron (Auckland, New Zealand), Royal Prince

Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (Sydney,

Australia), San Francisco Yacht Club, Seattle Yacht Club, South of

Perth Yacht Club (Australia) and Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans.

Each team of three sailors will race identical yachts --

lightweight 21-foot sloops -- for four days of round-robin

competition.

SOCCER

Girls under-16

The Newport Beach-based Slammers FC girls under-16 soccer team won

their second regional title in two years last weekend at the U.S.

Youth Soccer Association’s Far West regionals.

The Slammers defeated Oregon state champion Portland Maroon, 2-0.

The title earns the Slammers a berth in the national championship

next month in Orlando, Fla., where they will compete against the

other three regional champions.

The Slammers allowed no goals during the six-day tournament while

outscoring their six opponents, 21-0. During their recent State Cup

championship run, the Slammers outscored their six opponents, 20-0.

This is the same Slammers team that won the national championship in

2003 when they were in the under-14 division.

Players on the team include Alyssa Davila of Upland, Ashley Elliot

of Corona, Tanya Emerson of Capo Beach, Taylor Fallon of Newport

Beach, Leslie Grandy of Diamond Bar, Jessica Gordon of Tujunga,

Lauren Gregston of Lake Forest, Haleigh Guertin of Corona, Lauren

Hernandez of Long Beach, Megan Jesolva of La Mirada, Kellye Joswick

of Placentia, Alicia Lugo of Lancaster, Cindy Mendoza of Costa Mesa,

Christina Murillo of Rancho Santa Margarita, Christen (Mo) Press of

Palos Verdes Estates, Kristin Thuve of Huntington Beach, Leslie White

of Corona and Jackie Zinke of Corona Del Mar. The Slammers are

coached by Ziad Khoury of Costa Mesa with assistance from Frank

Jesolva of La Mirada and Monique Garciaparra of Whittier.

Boys under-10

The Corona del Mar OCU boys under-10 club soccer team won the

prestigious Irvine Summer Classic tournament over the weekend. In the

first game, CdM beat Laguna Niguel, 3-2, with strikes from Landon

Gyulay, Christopher Von Der Ahe and Chris Nealey.

In the second game, outstanding defense was played by Nick

McGuiness and Brian Team while Gyulay tallied the single goal in a

1-0 victory over Vista. On Sunday, in a heated game against the Heber

team from Yuma, CdM prevailed, 2-0, with goals from Davis Case and

Carter Keddington. The midfield was controlled by Troy Osterberg,

Reed Wolonsky and Coner Roche while Nick Sargent defended the

backfield.

In the championship game CdM won, 4-0, over Laguna Niguel, as

goalie Rusty Padia made two saves while brother Tommy Padia, Case,

Gyulay and Robby Wilson found the back of the net.

SWIMMING

Numerous individuals from the Harbor View swim team won races

Saturday in a dual meet against Green Valley.

In girls races, Katie Craig (ages 7-8) won the 25-yard freestyle

in 14.54 seconds, while Allison McCormick (ages 9-10) set a pool

record with a 50 free time of 29.55. Victoria Gabert clocked 36.07 in

the 100 individual medley.

The girls (ages 9-10) 200 free relay team of Jules Pouch, Ellen

Naruse, McCormick and Cassidy Pappa finished in a record-setting

2:04.63.

In boys races, Ricky Zak (ages 7-8) clocked 19.19 in the 25

breaststroke; Hoyt Crance (ages 7-8) finished the 25 butterfly in

16.03; Justin Hanson (ages 7-8) recorded 32.56 in the 50 free; and

Brian Buhagiar (ages 15-18) clocked 57.50 in the individual medley.

* In a dual meet on June 18, the Harbor View swim team defeated

host Lake Forest II, 734-526.

Katie Craig (ages 7-8) started off the Harbor View girls with a

triple-win in the 25-yard free stroke (16.65 seconds), 50 free

(35.87) and 25 backstroke (19.38).

Heather Van Hiel (ages 13-14) was another triple-winner in the 50

free in 27.29, the 50 butterfly in 30.28 and 100 individual medley in

1:09.86. She also aided Melissa Hohl, Elise Molnar and Erin McAdams

in the first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:12.17).

The Harbor View boys were led by triple-winner Justin Hanson (ages

7-8), who was first in the 25 free (15.31), 25 fly (17.21) and 25

back (19.01).

Hanson also took part in the 100 medley relay victory (1:13.91)

along with Brett Schisler, Hoyt Crance and Ricky Zac.

Another Harbor View triple-winner was Kevin Cox (ages 13-14), who

won the 50 breast stroke in 35.53, the 50 fly in 28.95 and the 100 IM

in 1:07.88.

Allison McCormick (ages 9-10) was a winner for Harbor View in the

50 free (30.02), 25 fly (16.67) and the 100 medley relay (1:07.28),

along with Jules Pouch, Delaney Pouch and Regina Scholey.

Harbor View’s Pippa Saunders (ages 11-12) won the 50 free (29.97),

50 breast stroke (38.43) and the 200 medley relay (2:14.87) with

Victoria Gabert, Margot Money and Sarah Craig.

VOLLEYBALL

Boys 14s

The Balboa Bay Volleyball Club’s 14-year old Blue team won the

season-ending Southern California Volleyball Association’s Boys

Classic on Monday. The four-day tournament included 49 teams from all

over California, the Midwest and New York, and is the second largest

volleyball tournament in the country.

The Balboa Bay team, which trains at Corona Del Mar High, won

eight of its nine matches on Friday through Sunday, and then beat

Orange Coast Volleyball Club of Laguna Beach, and Highline Volleyball

Club of Long Beach on Monday to advance to the finals. Balboa Bay

then faced the Riptides Volleyball Club of Manhattan Beach for the

Boys Classic championship.

Balboa Bay started slowly in the championship match, losing the

first game, 25-16. Balboa bounced back, however, and handily won the

second game, 25-11. Balboa Bay won the third game, 20-18.

Balboa Bay was led by outside hitters JB Green, Michael Helfrich,

Andy Morrow, and Michael Maddox. Connor Hughes, Bayle Smith, Riley

Paone, and Seth Morris all were strong at middle blocker, and setters

Connor Bannan and Harrison Caroll each had numerous assists. Libero

Drew Russell provided strong defense. Balboa Bay is coached by Trent

Jackson.
