Residents weigh in on tsunami warning

AT ISSUE: Was this month’s tsunami warning in Newport Beach

effective?

I do not think people need to worry about the Eureka fault. They

should worry more about the Catalina fault. In the case of

evacuation, I think that Balboa Boulevard should be made into a

one-way street so that everyone can get off the peninsula quickly.

I think the police did a wonderful job of warning residents.

No, it was not effective. I had no idea there was a warning until

someone called. I had 15 people over for a meeting.

I called the Newport Beach Police and was put on hold for three

minutes and then told it was a real threat. The policeman said, “I

advise you to evacuate immediately.”

Then we grabbed our sleeping children and ran off the island. It

was surreal.

We saw people who did not know about the warning just walking

around, and we tried to warn them. I couldn’t sleep after that.

No, it was not handled well on Lido or Balboa islands.

No, the warning was not adequate. I called the fire department,

and they said that they, along with the police, would walk around,

block to block, warning people. That would take forever.

I think they need a major emergency siren on the island to warn

people. My friend was watching the Angels game, and there was no

warning.

The warning definitely was not effective. We subscribe to DirecTV

(not Comcast) so we had no warning on our TV station. Fortunately,

our daughter in Aliso Viejo called and warned us.

We live on Balboa Island, so we would have probably been affected

if there had been a tsunami. I hate to think how we will know if

there ever is a disaster.
