Sculpture competition finalists

The City of Laguna Beach Arts Commission has selected finalists

for the Art in Public Places competition for outside City Hall. The

finalists are: Linda Brunker, Micha von Doring and Andrew Myers,

Gerard Stripling, Nairi Bagdagulyan, John Barber and Ralph Tarzian.

The finalists will present their concepts and proposals at a

special Arts Commission meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the City

Council Chambers, 505 Forest Ave. The public is encouraged to attend

“Out of the Closet”

Gallery 821 will host its first “Out of the Closet” Block Party

and Art Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. July 13. Gallery 821, 821 Laguna

Canyon Road, is between the Sawdust Festival and the Art-A-Fair. The

evening includes food, wine and art.

A variety of artwork, original paintings and drawings in a variety

of media, was generously contributed by people who donated pieces of

art “out of their closet” for this event. Laguna Culinary Arts will

offer wine for $5 a glass.

Proceeds will benefit Laguna College of Art & Design Student

Scholarship Fund. More than 80% of the college’s students require

some level of financial assistance to continue their education. For

Great Jazz in July

Laguna Beach Live! is presenting Jazz in the Rose Garden from 6 to

8 p.m. July 14 with vocalist Jamie Shew, pianist Eric Dries and

bassist Roger Shew in a performance of straight-ahead swing, lush

Latin rhythms and elegant ballads. Tickets are $10; wines by the glass and tapas available for purchase. The concert is at the Rose

Garden at the Hotel Laguna, 425 S. Coast Highway. For information,

The Series continues on Aug. 18 with the Latin Jazz Syndicate

featuring Bijon Watson; Sept. 15 will be the gypsy jazz of Club

Django and Sept. 29 will be traditional New Orleans style jazz by

Brew Ha Ha

Epstein Productions presents a comedy review, “One Funny Night” at

8 p.m. July 13 and 27 at Laguna Beach Brewing Co. 422 S. Coast

Highway. Cover charge is $7. Special guests for July 13 include Steve Mazan, Last Comic Standing, Bernadette, Hollywood Improv and

Christina, MTV Real World Australia, Michael Flood, Comedy Store on

Wyland Foundation reopening

Wyland and the Wyland Foundation will host a grand reopening of

the Wyland Foundation office and Fine Art Gallery at 2171 Laguna

Canyon Road from 6 to 9 p.m. July 16. The event includes updates on

upcoming programs, including the Wyland Ocean Challenge West Coast

Cleanup Tour and a presentation from Wyland about the foundation’s

vision for “Clean Water for the 21st Century.” Light refreshments

will be served. Business attire is suggested. The event is open to

Wyland holds fundraiser

Wyland Foundation is hosting a benefit fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m.

July 17 in support of clean water education, which includes a live

art and silent auction, a Wyland art demonstration and a question and

answer session. Food, wine, hors d’oeuvres, chocolates and a coffee

bar will be offered. The Ocean Institute located at 24200 Dana Point

Harbor Drive in Dana Point will be hosting the event. Cocktail attire

is suggested.

A minimum donation of $125 includes membership to the Wyland

Foundation. The VIP level donation of $1,000 includes a Dolphin

Harbor Cruise with Wyland on board. Limited space is available. For

Medical Center debuts Art Walk

South Coast Medical Center Auxiliary is introducing an Art Walk at

South Coast. The first display will feature local landscape artist,

Tim Howe, at 2 p.m. July 22, with festivities beginning at 2 p.m. The

community is invited to meet Howe at the opening day celebration with

a ribbon cutting, refreshments and a live ice sculpting exhibit at

South Coast Medical Center at 31872 S. Coast Highway. For

Museum plans

docent class

Laguna Art Museum is looking for new members for its Docent Corps,

an essential group of individuals who conduct informative tours and

educational outreach about the museum’s exhibitions for adults,

children, and a variety of schools and organizations.

An informational tea will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11,

and weekly provisional training will begin in October.
