All Stars capture first place

The Fountain Valley Pony A All Star team captured first place Sunday

at the Fountain Valley Pony Baseball Tournament.

The three-day tournament was played at Fountain Valley High.

The A all-star team roster is composed of several players from

Huntington Beach, as well as some from Fountain Valley.

The Fountain Valley Pony B All Star team finished in second place.

The Pony A all star team is composed of Danny Tierney, Tim

Higgins, Beau Amaral, Tab Pagter, Nick Mazzone, Jason Morash, Jacob

Springer, Brayden Kent and Kevin Nance of Huntington Beach, and Kyle

Schellenger of Fountain Valley, Ryan Miller of Costa Mesa and Deondre

Moss of Westminster.

The Pony B all star team players are Trevor Springman, Kevin

Mackey, Alex Holtz, Matt Jacinto, Richie Levinson, John Combest, Zach

Michaels, Houston Hill, Scott Martin, Daniel Zavala and Henry Owens.

The Pony A all-star team opened play Tuesday at the District

tournament. The score was not available at press time.

The Pony B all-star team opens District tournament play this week

in Garden Grove.

In other Pony Baseball action:

The Fountain Valley Mustang A All Star team opened the District

Tournament at West Haven Park in Garden Grove with a 3-1 record.

The all-star team scored mercy rule victories over Tustin, 18-4,

and Anaheim, 13-2, to start the tournament; lost, 2-1, to La Mirada

in its third game; then defeated Tustin again, 14-13, to stay alive

in the double-elimination event.

Fountain Valley played Seal Beach on Wednesday in an elimination

game, but the score was not available at press time.

A victory would advance the team to the Section Tournament in

Whittier on Friday.

In its tournament-opening, 18-4 rout of Tustin that was called

after four innings, Jacob Vega began the game with a home run and

finished with three hits overall. Wyatt Christensen, Scotty Weaver

and Brad Owen each scored three runs.

The 13-2 win over Anaheim saw Jonathan Marriott hit a home run and

drive n three runs, Joey De Marco triple and Nestor Linares double

twice to the fence.

Patrick Cromwell, Wyatt Heise and Aaron Vargas keyed the Fountain

Valley defense.

Although it outhit La Mirada, Fountain Valley dropped its third

tournament game, 2-1. Jacob Peralta allowed only two hits in six

innings, tying up La Mirada with his combination of great location

and tricky off-speed throws.

In its last outing, Fountain Valley held off Tustin, 14-13. De

Marco went four for four and drove in three runs and threw two solid

innings to close out the game. Christensen and Vega each had three

hits, Alek Torgersen doubled and singled, Brett Adams doubled and

Marriott scored three runs.

“This team can really hit the ball,” Mustang A All Star manager

Jim De Marco said. “What has surprised other teams is that the bottom

of our order can produce as much as the top.”

In racquetball action:

Samuel Barrera, 11, of Huntington Beach won the under-12 division

singles title and teamed with partner Stile Martin to take

first-place in the under-14 juniors doubles tournament at the 2005

World Outdoor Racquetball Championships.

The tournament, which drew players with various levels of

experience, from the professional ranks to juniors, was held at

Golden West College. Players came from as far away as Hawaii, Bolivia

and Colombia.

The other tournament winners were: under-18: Ryan Schneider;

under-14: Stile Martin; under-10: David Nguyen.
