Breakers win

The Newport Beach Breakers bounced back onto the winning track and

defeated the host New York Buzz, 25-15, in overtime Wednesday in a

World Team Tennis match in Schenectady, N.Y.

Ramon Delgado improved to 30-8 in men’s singles following a 5-2

victory over New York’s Jim Courier, and the Breakers (4-2) got back

to winning after two straight losses.

The men’s doubles team of Delgado and Devin Bowen, the latter a

former Estancia High tennis standout, defeated Courier and Jaymon

Crabb, 5-1, while Delgado and Anastassia Rodionova won, 5-2, in mixed

doubles.

Katerina Bondarenko defeated Evie Dominikovic, 5-4 (5-3), in a

women’s singles match.

New York fell to 2-5. The Breakers face host Delaware at 7 p.m.

Eastern time today.

Chandy advances

* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School senior-to-be Zach Chandy won

Heat 7 of the 400 meters in the opening round of the World Junior

championships (under 18) Wednesday in Marrakech, Morrocco.

Chandy, who claimed the CIF Southern Section Division IV 200 and

400 titles in the spring, clocked 47.90 seconds Wednesday to advance

to the semifinal today. The final is slated for Friday.

Long Beach Poly’s Bryshon Nellum, who competed against Chandy

during the CIF postseason, won Heat 1 Wednesday, also in 47.90, to

advance to the semifinal.

Choe on to round of 32

* GOLF: Jay Choe, who will be a senior at UC Irvine this fall,

advanced to the round of 32 at the 80th U.S. Amateur Public Links

golf championship following his round Wednesday at Shaker Ridge Golf

Club in Lebanon, Ohio.

Choe defeated Steven Strong of Santa Rosa, Calif., 3 and 2, in the

first round of match play.

He will face Gilberto Rodriguez of Mexico Thursday morning.

Rodriguez, who played at San Diego State, defeated John Cassidy of

Yelm, Wash., 5 and 3, in the first round.

Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie, the first female golfer to play in

a United States Golf Association men’s event, also advanced to the

second round of match play following a 1-up victory over Will

Claxton.

The round of 16 matches will be contested Thursday afternoon with

two more rounds scheduled for Friday. The 36-hole final is scheduled

for Saturday.

The winner of the tournament has traditionally received an

invitation to the Masters.
