Newport Beach resident and Big Canyon Country Club member Warren

Caves and Michael Wanamaker, from Costa Mesa, each qualified at

separate sites earlier this week for next month’s 22nd Southern

California Golf Association Mid-Amateur championship.

Caves earned medalist honors Tuesday when he shot 2-under-par 70

at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta, leading a group of 11 golfers

who qualified for the Mid-Amateur, scheduled Aug. 29-30 at North

Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

Wanamaker shot a 4-over 75 and was one of five players to qualify

following their rounds at the Rancho San Marcos Golf Course in Santa

Barbara Monday. Wanamaker finished three shots back of co-medalists

Jason Goode of Castaic and Mark Pavletich of Bakersfield.

Newport Beach Country Club’s ladies team is rolling into the

second round of team play.

NBCC, which has 28 total players, 20 who compete during matches,

defeated Stone Ridge Country Club in the first round last week and

faces Lomas Santa Fe today.

NBCC finished the regular season 7-1, winning the gross section of

its group, which includes teams from Mission Viejo Country Club, Old

Ranch Country Club, Dove Canyon Country Cub and Rolling Hills Country

Club.

The format for team play is partner’s better ball match play.

Eight pairs for each team face one another in a match.

In other Newport Beach Country Club news, Rita Auelmann tallied a

hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth hole June 30.
