Blood will be well-guarded

Help save lives by donating blood at the annual Newport Beach

lifeguards’ blood drive from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the lifeguards’

headquarters at the base of the Newport Pier. The Newport lifeguards

will compete against other Southern California lifeguard agencies to

donate the most blood, a competition they’ve won four of the last

five years.

As many as 150 blood donors from the public are needed. To

participate in the blood drive, call (949) 644-3178 and bring along a

picture I.D.

Catch CATCHpenny’s show

In May, the independent rock band CATCHpenny played a charity

concert at Corona del Mar High School to help find a cure for

Duchenne muscular dystrophy. On Wednesday, the band will play at the

Key Club in Hollywood in front of a number of major-label executives

-- and Newport-Mesa residents can catch a ride to the show together.

CureDuchenne, the beneficiary of the school concert, will provide a

bus from the Newport Beach Public Library to the Key Club at 7 p.m.

The show begins at the Key Club at 8:30 p.m., with the bus

returning to Newport Beach some time after midnight. Call (310)

320-0873 for more information.

the city’s 2006 Rose Parade float. The ship leaves from 2901 W. Coast

Highway in Newport Beach, and the trip includes hors d’oeuvres and

champagne.
