Hayley Peirsol, a former Newport Harbor High standout swimmer, saved

her best for last on Sunday at the Janet Evans Invitational on the

USC campus in Los Angeles.

Peirsol capped a sterling four days with her fourth victory by

setting meet and pool records, along with securing the second-fastest

time in the world this year, with her finish in the women’s

1,500-meter freestyle. Peirsol, who will be a junior at Auburn

University in the fall, touched in 16 minutes, 13.64 seconds, well

ahead of Olympian Kalyn Keller of USC (16:48.19), who set the prior

meet record of 16:19.34 last year.

Peirsol shattered a 16-year-old McDonald’s Stadium record of

16:14.12 set by Julie Kole with her performance in the 1,500.

The victory adds to Peirsol’s wins in the 800 free (8:37.83), 400

free (4:13.53) and 400 individual medley (4:48.50) at the meet, a

tuneup for both the FINA World Championships and World University

Games. Peirsol, the younger sister of Olympic gold medalist Aaron

Peirsol, will compete for the United States in the World University

Games Aug. 12-17 in Izmir, Turkey.

Stephanie Gabert, the reigning CIF Southern Section Division II

champion in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM, clocked a lifetime best

2:32.72 in placing second in the 200 breaststroke to go with a

fifth-place showing in the 100 breastroke (1:12.65).
