AVIVA GOELMAN

Ever since my August 2000 appointment as executive director of the

Costa Mesa Senior Center, I have felt fortunate to serve everyday in

a place that is bright, vibrant and always filled with the chatter

and laughter of active people enjoying the golden years of their

lives. The center truly is one of Costa Mesa’s treasures, vital to

the fabric of our community.

As I get around this city, I find citizens who have lived in our

community for many years, yet many have never heard about us. One of

the tasks undertaken by our board of directors is to make sure that

the word about the center gets out to more and more of the city’s

residents.

The center is governed by a caring and committed board of

directors. Board members come from all walks of life and bring energy

and dedication to the center’s needs.

We are looking to add board members, in conjunction with the Costa

Mesa City Council, to fill two appointed positions on the Costa Mesa

Senior Corporation board of directors. The Costa Mesa Senior

Corporation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation that governs the

Costa Mesa Senior Center’s fundraising strategies through personal

influence with potential supporters, such as corporations,

individuals and foundations.

The board of directors meets the third Tuesday of every month from

7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Costa Mesa Senior Center, located at 695 W.

19th Street. Directors are expected to attend these meetings

regularly, to participate on one or more committees, and to attend at

least two events per year. Directors are also expected to assist with

the fundraising efforts of the corporation.

Desirable experiences or education for prospective candidates

include:

* Personal or professional experience in public relations,

personnel, fundraising or finance.

* Education or experience in working with or as an advocate for

aging populations.

* Leadership in professional or business organizations.

* Personal or professional networks of influence.

People interested in applying for appointment should contact Jana

Ransom, with the City of Costa Mesa, at (714) 754-5654 or e-mail

jransom@ci.costa-mesa.ca.us.

Candidates are also encouraged to make direct application to the

board. For more information, please contact me at (714) 645-2356.

Applications may be submitted through Friday. Applications will be

reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Costa Mesa Senior

Corporation board of directors. The City Council will make

appointments at its Sept. 6 meeting.

INVITATION TO BREAKFAST

The Newport Harbor Lions Club will be serving a pancake breakfast,

and you can have your car washed by members of the Crossing church on

July 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Costa Mesa Senior Center

parking lot at 695 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa. A $5 donation for

breakfast and a $5 donation for the car wash is suggested.
