Acclaimed professor joins UCI ranks

George E. Marcus, an influential author and anthropologist, has

been appointed as a chancellor’s professor in UC Irvine’s School of

Social Sciences.

Marcus is the 13th faculty member at UCI who holds the title of

chancellor’s professor, which is reserved for professors who have

achieved special acclaim for their accomplishments. Along with having

chaired the anthropology department at Rice University in Houston for

25 years, Marcus has published five books and edited numerous others.

In his two most famous works, “Writing Culture” and “Anthropology

as Cultural Critique,” Marcus examined anthropology not merely by

describing ancient cultures, but also by regarding the ways in which

modern society and technology affected them. Last year, he served as

a fellow in Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the

Behavioral Sciences.

“George Marcus is a leading scholar and a remarkably innovative

intellectual who has led a revolution with anthropology,” said

Michael Burton, chair of the anthropology department at UCI. “We are

thrilled to have him join our faculty and believe his scholarship and

research will benefit students and colleagues throughout social

sciences and humanities.”
