Youth baseball club team to hold tryouts

The Huntington Beach Vikings Baseball Club 11-and-under team has

tryouts underway for its 2005/06 season. The Major Division team is

looking for experienced ballplayers to fill four vacated spots on its

roster.

To be eligible, a player’s birthday must fall between May 1, 1994

and April 30, 1995.

Char New water polo coach at Huntington

Eugene Char has been named the new water polo coach for the boys’

and girls’ programs at Huntington Beach High.

Char comes to the Oilers from La Habra High, where he led the

Highlanders to six Freeway League championships in his eight years at

the school.

La Habra qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs in each

of those eight years and finished among the top 10 in the

CIF-Southern Section Division II poll in each of those years.

Fall practice for Huntington Beach boys’ program begins Aug. 22.

Parents of all players are urged to attend an information meeting at

7 p.m. Monday at the school’s student center.

Surf Film Festival continues its run

During the week of the Bank of the West Beach Games, the third

annual Surf Film Festival is being held at Mann’s Pierside Pavilion 6

Theaters.

The theaters are located at the intersection of Main Street and

Pacific Coast Highway.

The festival began Monday and continues through Friday. The

screenings will showcase classic and inspiring footage of surfing

legends and contests.

Screenings will be at 7 and 9 p.m. each night.

Several showings will be held as fundraisers for upcoming surfing

competitions and surf injury support groups.

Session in progress for water polo club

Golden West Water Polo Club, a year-round competitive water polo

team, is running its summer session now through Aug. 21.

The club is open to youth 7 to 14, and athletes must be able to

swim 25-yards.

The second session currently is in progress and runs though July

31. A third session will run from Aug. 1 to 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.

every Tuesday and Thursday at Golden West College.
