Mustang All-Stars capture regional tourney

The Fountain Valley Pony Baseball Mustang “A” All-Star team can boast

about being No. 1 in Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Last weekend, the squad capped an undefeated run through region

tournament play in Corona to win the tournament championship. The

team, composed of several players from Huntington Beach, eliminated

teams from Jurupa, Corona and La Mirada.

Fountain Valley needed to go eight innings to dispose of Jurupa,

10-7. It won the game by getting three consecutive singles in the

frame to break a 7-7 tie.

Joey De Marco went four for five with a double, Wyatt Christensen

scored three times, and Nestor Linares drove in five runs.

The outfield speed of Alek Torgersen, Brett Adams and Johnathan

Marriott helped them run down numerous fly balls. Marriott also threw

out a runner at first from right field on what would have been a base

hit.

Fountain Valley’s next outing was a bit easier, as it scored a

12-4 win over host Corona. Scotty Weaver scored four runs, Adams

drove in two runs, and Patrick Cromwell and Wyatt Heise each singled.

Brad Owen pitched a complete game victory and Jacob Vega came up

with some key defensive stops at third base to lead the defense.

Fountain Valley’s tournament run concluded with a 6-4 win over La

Mirada.

De Marco pitched six quality innings and kept the opposition off

balance with his variety of speed and location. He was backed up by a

defense that turned three double plays.

Christensen doubled and singled and Aaron Vargas scored the

winning run on a close play at the plate.

“There are thousands of league teams and a couple hundred All-Star

teams in Orange County and the Inland Empire,” Mustang “A” All-Star

manager Jim De Marco said. “To be the top team is an amazing

accomplishment that I hope will last these boys a lifetime.

“We have played 25 games over five tournaments and they just keep

getting better and better. I look forward to see them continue to

excel through high school and beyond.”

In addition to Jim De Marco, the Mustang A all-stars are coached

by Mike Weaver and Rick Christensen.
