No Square Theatre will present “Lagunatics 2005: Senior Prom” at

Laguna Beach High School Artists’ Theatre tonight, Saturday and

Sunday. This hilarious musical revue of local performers is the

kickoff fund-raiser for the Laguna Beach Seniors’ capital campaign to

build, equip, and endow a new senior center in Laguna Beach.

More than 50 cast members from movie critic Bill Harris to Mayor

Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider and Police Chief Jim Spreine will perform

in all-original parodies such as, “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Dress

Up To Be Call Girls” “Cooking School Dropout” and “Montagio.” It’s an

annual favorite, “roast of life on the coast.”

Today’s opening night is a “Sock Hop” from 6 to 7:45 p.m. followed

by Lagunatics at 8 p.m. Tickets are $75. Saturday’s theme is “Class

Reunion” from 12 to 1:45 p.m. followed by Lagunatics at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $40 and $50.

Saturday Night is the Ketel One Gala Night starting with a “Senior

prom” from 6 to 7:45 p.m. and Lagunatics at 8 p.m. Tickets are $125

and include valet parking, Ketel One martini’s, fine wine, a gourmet

buffet, raffle and more.

Each showing offers fine wines, snacks, dessert and a raffle, as

well as on Sunday, closing night. Sunday’s theme is “Summer Picnic”

from 5 to 6:45 and Lagunatics at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75.

Festival of Arts hosts cultural Day

From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday the Festival of Arts is having its

annual Hawaiian Cultural Day. The event features faraway cultures,

traditions, lei making, fine art and hands-on crafts, music and other

Hawaiian influences showcased through demonstrations. Joe Aki and the

Poi Pounders will play Hawaiian music with hula dancing.

There will also be a drawing, donated by event sponsor Aloha

Airlines, giving away two tickets to either Kona, Honolulu or Maui.

The event is free with Festival of Arts admission, $7 for general

admission and $5 for seniors and students. Laguna Beach locals get

free admission every day with proper identification.

College sponsors alumni exhibit

Laguna College of Art & Design will have an exhibition of leading

artists and designers who received their bachelor’s degrees from

Laguna College. “The Annual Juried Alumni Exhibition,” will show

original artwork by alumni. The exhibition begins Saturday and runs

through Aug. 27 at the college gallery with an artist reception from

7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4.

Plein-air event

called a success

More than 400 guests attended the Gala Dinner and Collector

Preview Sale for the 7th Annual Laguna Beach Plein-Air Painting

Invitational. More than $315,000 (gross) was raised to benefit Laguna

Art Museum, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and

participating artists.

Awards were presented at the Gala to artists selected by the

guests and by the artists. The Collector’s Choice Award (overall)

went to Kenn Backhaus and the Artist’s Choice Award to George

Strickland. Southwest Art presented the Best in Show award to Clark

Mitchell and Plein-Air magazine presented its Certificate of Merit to

Laguna Beach artist Ken Auster.

Each year, the Invitational showcases the artistic skills of the

fifty invited artists as they work outdoors.

Museum puts on barely used-book sale

Laguna Art Museum will be holding another of its sale of pre-read

books, carefully used catalogs, and barely read art magazines during

the First Thursday Art Walk from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Museum

lobby.

The public is encouraged to donate art books on American art,

particularly that of California, to augment the library’s collection.

Contributions of other art books on diverse subjects will be sold to

benefit the library.

Concerts at Bluebird Park continue

Sunday marks the second concert of the eight-week season of the

2005 Summer Concert Series at Bluebird Park, with Steve Copeland and

Raging Sun performing Chicago style blues. The concerts are free and

go from 5 to 7 p.m. Bluebird Park is at the corner of Bluebird Drive

Playhouse place

for new musical

“The Musical of Musicals -- The Musical” is being performed

through Sept. 4 at Laguna PlayhouseSee the West Coast premiere of the

sensational new musical that celebrates and satirizes Rogers and

Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jerry Herman and

Kander and Ebb.

Exhibitors show off their skimboards

In Project Skimboard, Sawdust Festival exhibitors were given a

blank skimboard to turn into a work of art. These works will be in

the exhibitors’ booths through Aug. 4. The boards will be auctioned

at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 with the proceeds going to Surfrider Foundation,

Laguna Outreach for Community Arts and the Sawdust Art Festival’s

programs. The fundraiser will feature live entertainment.
