Costa Mesa man, 30, dies in collision

A 30-year-old Costa Mesa man was killed in a head-on collision at

10:05 p.m. Sunday on Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, police said.

Nathaniel Colin Hall, a passenger in a 1998 Acura Integra, was

killed when the driver of an Acura crossed into oncoming traffic and

hit a 2004 Toyota Prius, police said.

The driver of the Acura, Mary Werner, of Monrovia, is suspected of

drunken driving.

Werner is in critical condition at Mission Hospital in Mission

Viejo.

The occupants of the Toyota, Chris and Marie Hansen, of Aliso

Viejo, were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and were

treated for minor injuries.

Hall was pronounced dead at the scene.

Newport police to host barbecue

As part of National Night Out Against Crime, the Newport Beach

Police Department will host a community barbecue from 4 to 8 p.m.

today at Bonita Canyon Sports Park, Bonita Canyon Road and Mesa View

Drive.

National Night Out is a night when people are asked to lock their

doors, turn on outside lights and spend time with neighbors and the

local police department.

The free event will feature food, games and crime prevention tips.

The community will also have a chance to see police vehicles, a K9

unit and McGruff, the police mascot.

Residents can sign up for police program

The Costa Mesa Police Department is taking applications for the

Community Policing Citizens’ Academy, which will be held from 6:30 to

9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 6 to Nov. 29.

The Citizens’ Academy is a free, 13-week program designed to

educate the public about law enforcement.

Students will learn about the police department from experts in

the areas of K9, SWAT, narcotics, patrol operations, helicopter,

traffic laws, criminal laws and other fields.

Applicants must be at least 21, with no outstanding warrants, no

pending criminal cases, no felony convictions and no misdemeanor

arrests within the last three years.
