Elizabeth Mary Gaudino -- known as “Nanny,” “Betty” and “Red” -- died

Sunday at her Laguna Beach home, surrounded by her family. She was 95

and died of congestive heart failure.

Gaudino was born Feb. 7, 1910 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was married

for 26 years to Joseph Gaudino, a lawyer from New York. Shortly after

her husband’s death, she moved to New Jersey to live with her

daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Sal Del Pizzo, and their four

children. At the prompting of her son, William Gaudino, the entire

family moved to Laguna Beach in 1978.

A retired fashion designer, she lived with her family, enjoying an

active life, walking up and down Locust Street to Main Beach

sometimes twice a day, until she was 93 years old.

“As long as you are walking and know what to wear, you will never

get old,” she said.

She is survived by her children, William and Mary Ann, and their

spouses, as well as four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren,

ages 2 to 18.

Services were scheduled for Thursday at McCormick & Son Mortuary

in Laguna Beach.
