Board makes smart business decisions

Congratulations to the Orange County Fair board members for

getting it right one more time. Not only was the fair a complete

success that met the board’s long term goals, but more important, it

made the right decision in awarding the lease for the parking lot to

the Orange County Market Place for another 10 years. The public

letter from the swap meet’s president, Jeff Teller, just emphasizes

how truly unique and wonderful their business is and how genuinely

touching their story is. Right in line with the actual fair, the

Tellers’ business is a home-grown American success story that

everyone in Orange County is proud to have. It is truly a place, as

their company motto states, creating entrepreneurial opportunities

since 1969. The fair board and the Market Place each deserves a round

of applause and a hearty congratulations.

Churches are serving important roles

In these troubled times since Sept. 11, 2001, I believe it has

become incumbent on all communities to embrace and enhance the values

on which our country was founded. Specifically, churches and family

congregation and meeting places have rekindled the sense of community

that has not been seen in America since World War II.

I applaud any and all resources that especially give our children

a safe and welcoming place to go. And it appears that churches in the

Newport-Mesa area are the very ones filling a void, as no others have

been able to do. Our Lady Queen of Angels, St. Joaquim, St. Andrew’s,

St. James, the Crossing, Rock Harbor and the new Mormon temple are

all addressing the needs of our children and of our communities

through thousands of valuable programs. They are all expanding,

reaching out and providing a place of fellowship -- and I see this as

a good sign for our future.

It’s time to reassess what true values are.

It’s not in the chunk of land on which you’ve built your castle --

it’s the investment in our community and our children that will yield

the greatest return.
